Grants to Northern Virginia nonprofit organizations to benefit local communities in the areas of children and youth, education, poverty relief, military personnel and their families, health, aging, and mental health. Eligible communities include Fairfax, Arlington, Prince William, and Loudoun Counties, as well as the Cities of Fairfax, Alexandria, Manassas, Falls Church, and Manassas Park.

Grant requests for capacity building, program, or general support purposes will be considered. Funding may be used to support, expand, or enhance existing programs or to start new programs.

The Community Foundation establishes priority funding areas within each fund. For 2019, the Community Foundation will consider applications in the following categories:

Child & Youth Development: To help children and youth to thrive
- Positive youth development organizations or programs that support and provide opportunities to children and youth (age birth - 21) who may be at risk due to poverty (defined as up to 200% of the federal poverty level.)

Proposals in the following areas will be considered:
- Afterschool/Summer Activities
- Academic Achievement

Education: To increase the number of children and adults who are prepared to enter a competitive workforce in the 21st century.
- Organizations that support and provide early childhood programs, English language proficiency programs for adults and/or children, or job training/skills based education.

Proposals in the following areas will be considered:
- Early Childhood Education
- English Language Proficiency for Adults and Children
- Workforce Development/Skills-based Education

Military Personnel & Their Families: To support the growing needs of military personnel and their families.
- Workforce Development/Job Training Skills for Military personnel, veterans and/or their families

Poverty Relief: To relieve the suffering caused by poverty in Northern Virginia.
- Organizations or programs that provide assistance to people affected by poverty, including shelter, eviction/foreclosure prevention and other emergency assistance. Proposals in the following areas will be considered:
- Housing/Shelter
- Eviction/Foreclosure Assistance
- Other non-food related Emergency Assistance

Applications that do not fall into the above categories will not be considered.

In an effort to support food programs in the region, the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia will continue working in partnership with the Capital Area Food Bank to support family markets in the region. Therefore, the Foundation will not be supporting additional food programs in this grant cycle.

Number of Grants:

The Military Personnel & Their Families Fund is accepting applications for one large impact grant for 2019.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The maximum grant is $10,000, with the exception of the Military Personnel & Their Families Fund, which is accepting applications for one $26,000 impact grant for 2019.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Organizations providing services in Northern Virginia (defined as the areas within Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William Counties and the Cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park) can apply for funding.

Applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations providing charitable or educational services.

Local, state and federal government entities are not eligible to apply.

Organizations are limited to one application per grant cycle. Multiple applications will not be considered.

Applications for capital improvements, endowments, or scholarship awards will not be considered.
