Grants of up to $5,000 to Massachusetts nonprofit organizations, volunteer-run neighborhood groups or associations, and individuals in eligible areas for programs that benefit local residents. Funding is intended for activities that build, strengthen, and support families and communities. Eligible individuals reside in the Greater Dudley area of Roxbury and Dorchester, and eligible organizations are located in the Greater Dudley area.

The Family Strengthening Small Grants Fund will give high priority to projects and activities that focus on:

  • Mending the social fabric of the neighborhood
  • Building, strengthening and supporting personal and family development
  • Broadening the horizons of individuals and families
  • Removing barriers to employment
  • Increasing parental involvement
  • Beautifying outdoor spaces
  • Community engagement.

Examples of family strengthening activities might include:

  • Out-of-school activities for youth or intergenerational activities
  • Parenting seminars
  • Life skills workshops (cooking, sewing, etc.)
  • Support groups and services for single parents
  • Community support for reintegrating residents from situations such as recovery, incarceration, etc.
  • Neighborhood cleanups.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Anticipated funding will be in the range of $500 - $5,000 per grant.

Term of Contract:

All grants are expected to be completed within a 12-month period from the date of receipt.

- The January 22, 2020 deadline is for summer programs that begin in June 2020.
- The April 28, 2020 deadline is for programs that start in September 2020.
- The July 7, 2020 deadline is for programs that start in December 2020 or January 2021.
- The January 20, 2021 deadline is for programs that start in June 2021.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Small Grants Fund will provide funding to proposals that are developed and carried out by resident volunteers who live in the Greater Dudley area of Roxbury and Dorchester, Massachusetts. In addition to resident volunteers, volunteer-run neighborhood groups and associations in the Greater Dudley area are also eligible.

Non-profit 501(c)(3) status is not required, but has to be organized for charitable activities for the benefit of families and neighborhoods.

If an organization does not have 501(c)(3) status for their activity/program/project, the applicant must use a fiscal agent (a non-profit organization that will take responsibility for the disbursement of grant funds). The fiscal agent must be incorporated in Massachusetts.

Large social service agencies, community-based organizations, and for-profit entities are not eligible.

Grant funds may not be used to pay salaries.

Applicants cannot apply for more than one grant in a calendar year.

The applicant should contact Che Madyun to confirm that their address is in the target area.

A simple application form will be required. Groups can also request technical assistance in the planning and preparation of the grant application. The technical support person will not write the grant application but will advise the group in answering questions on the application and in developing the budget.

If a program is awarded a grant, those funds will not be released until approximately two months following the application deadline date. This will be important to consider when planning activities.
