Grants to North Carolina nonprofit organizations, government and educational institutions, and congregants in eligible areas for capital support and programs that benefit local residents. Funding is available for activities within the focus areas of arts and culture, human services, recreation, economic development, workforce development, and K-12 and post-secondary education. Programs must take place in Richmond County.

Program Grants

Priority will be given to local proposals that evidence volunteer leadership and/or grassroots participation and financial support. Projects will be evaluated on the basis of: 

  1. Feasibility in terms of leadership and plan, 
  2. Significance in terms of the importance of the issue being addressed, and 
  3. The project’s potential for success.

Capital Grants for Land, Buildings, and Equipment

Priority will be given to proposals that demonstrate an organizational commitment in terms of leadership, financial support, and other resources. Priority will be given to “challenge grants” whereby other donors make matching gifts.

Future Funding

A project or program must have potential continuity through other funding sources in future years.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible organizations for competitive grantmaking programs include:
- 501(c)3 nonprofits
- Congregations
- Governmental institutions
- Educational institutions

If the organization conducting the project does not meet these criteria, you can apply for a grant under the fiscal sponsorship of an eligible organization.

The applicant may be an existing organization, a coalition of organizations, or a new organization. If the organization has been in existence past the seed stage, the proposal must be outside the realm of possible inclusion in the regular ongoing operating budget.

Requests typically not funded through the discretionary grants programs:
- Capital campaign requests
- Debt retirement/deficit funding
- Direct support of individuals (e.g. scholarships, hardship)
- Duplication of existing programs or services by new organizations
- Endowment funds
- Travel and conferences
- Publication of books
- Projects that are typically the funding responsibility of federal, state or local government
- Sponsorships or fundraisers

Requests ineligible for funding through the discretionary grants programs:
- Projects that promote political or religious views
- Political or lobbying activities

The following areas do not fall within The Cole Foundation’s current funding priorities:
- Ongoing operating budgets
- Endowment Funds
- Grants individuals (e.g. scholarships, hardship)
- Publication of books
- Conferences

Pre-Application Information:

The application deadline is August 14, 2020, at 12:00 PM, Noon (EST).

Final decisions are typically announced two months after the application deadline.
