Awards to USA, Canada, and International scientists for outstanding achievements in the sciences. Awards will recognize significant breakthroughs and innovations, and visionary work influencing the development of each discipline. Researchers in the fields of history, medicine, environmental sciences, biophysics and biochemistry, and cognitive science may be nominated.

There are five Heineken Prizes for Sciences:

Heineken Prize for Biochemistry and Biophysics

The Dr. H.P. Heineken Prize for Biochemistry and Biophysics rewards research excellence in biochemistry and biophysics. For more information about this prize, see:

Heineken Prize for History

Heineken Prize for Medicine

The Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Environmental Sciences

Heineken Prize for Cognitive Sciences

The C.L. de Carvalho-Heineken Prize for Cognitive Sciences is awarded to a distinguished researcher in cognitive science. The prize amount for each science prize is $200,000.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates eligible for nomination for the Heineken Prizes are those who:
- Are excellent, internationally recognized scientists;
- Are active scientists whose scientific work still holds considerable promise;
- Have an appointment at a university or research institute in the Netherlands or elsewhere.

The following are eligible to nominate candidates for the Heineken Prizes:
- Members of the Academy;
- Boards of management and deans of universities in the Netherlands;
- Directors of research institutes in the Netherlands;
- Individual professors from universities in the Netherlands and elsewhere;
- Academies and other scientific or scholarly institutions in the Netherlands and elsewhere;
- The board of the Dutch Network of Women Professors (Landelijk Netwerk Vrouwelijke Hoogleraren).

Academy Board members and members of the juries of the Heineken Prizes may not submit nominations jointly or individually and may not be nominated as candidates.

Pre-Application Information:

The deadline for nominations is 15 September 2021.

The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences selects the laureates.

The awards ceremony will be held late 2022.
