Grants of up to $7,500 to USA nonprofit organizations to support and advance the field of journalism. Funding is intended for journalism education and training. The purpose of the grant program is to provide professional journalists with the opportunity to strengthen and refresh their skill sets and to provide journalism students with hands-on experience.

The journalism fund supports multimedia education, First Amendment causes, career development, media research, an international free press, professional organizations, and programs that foster diversity, ethics and entrepreneurial enterprise in the communications profession.

Scripps Howard Foundation is are able to fund not-for-profit organizations only.

So that you can make the most of your time, please do not apply if your organization:
- Is not tax-exempt under Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3)
- Is a fraternal, labor or merchant association
- Is a private foundation
- Has practices are not in keeping with the Foundation’s equal opportunity policy
- Is an educational institution that is not at the college or university level
- Will fund for religious purposes
- Is a political organization or organization designed primarily to lobby
- Is health related
- Is an athletic team

Pre-Application Information:

Grants requests must be submitted in writing by April 15 for consideration during the year’s first grants period and by Sept. 10 for second-half consideration.

Successful grant applications are typically awarded in late June and December.

Before the application launches, applicants will complete a quick questionnaire to determine if their organization and Foundation priorities are aligned. If they are a match, applicants will be able to apply for a grant.
