Grants of up to $200 to Cook County, Illinois schools in eligible towns to implement measures to reduce, reuse and recycle more waste. Funding may be used to purchase materials, equipment, or educational resources. Awards are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

SWANCC grant funds are to be used to start or expand programs and activities focused on reducing waste by reusing items and recycling materials. Examples of eligible items include: reusable food trays or containers; reusable beverage cups, mugs or bottles; SWANCC-approved books and media; indoor/outdoor recycling or composting bins; dry-erase boards, etc.

To receive SWANCC Waste Grant funds, a school must be located in one of the following SWANCC-member towns, or the student/teacher population must be comprised of at least 50% from one or a combination of the following communities:

Arlington Heights, Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove Village, Evanston, Glenview, Glencoe, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Mount Prospect, Niles, Palatine, Park Ridge, Prospect Heights, Rolling Meadows, Skokie, South Barrington, Wheeling, Wilmette, and Winnetka.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Qualifying schools can receive up to $200 from SWANCC.

Term of Contract:

Receipts for equipment must be submitted to SWANCC for reimbursement before February 28, 2018.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify to receive a SWANCC Waste Reduction Grant, a K-12 school must be located in a SWANCC-member community; or 50% of the student population must live in one or a combination of one of the following SWANCC member communities:
Arlington Heights, Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove Village, Evanston, Glenview, Glencoe, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Mount Prospect, Niles, Palatine, Park Ridge, Prospect Heights, Rolling Meadows, Skokie, South Barrington, Wheeling, Wilmette, and Winnetka.

Grant funds cannot be used for maintenance or recycling service fees, for items that have an on-going cost, such as office supplies, liner bags for recycling or composting containers, CFL light bulbs, etc., or for pencils, temporary tattoos, t-shirts and field trips.

Pre-Application Information:

Applications must be submitted by individual schools between September 1 and October 31, 2017. However, funds are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Once SWANCC approves an application, materials can be purchased.
