Fellowships of $12,000 and awards of $1,000 to Massachusetts individual artists in recognition of exceptional original work in the disciplines of choreography, fiction and creative nonfiction, and painting. Funding is intended to provide direct, unrestricted support to outstanding artists.
Eligible for review in even years. This category accepts work in all choreographic styles, including mixed-media or multi-genre performance works in which choreography and/or organized movement of the human body(ies) is primary.
Eligible for review in even years. This category accepts literary work in all varieties and genres of fiction, including novels, short stories, flash fiction, and graphic novels. It also includes works of creative nonfiction distinguished by a strong narrative voice, such as memoir, personal essay, or descriptive prose. Work that is primarily critical, analytical, or scholarly will not be reviewed by the panel.
Eligible for review in even years. This category includes original work that involves painting of any kind upon any surface. Artists who make engravings, etchings, lithographs, prints, serigraphs, woodcuts, and drawings should apply in the Drawing category.

Any artist 18 years or older who has been a legal resident of Massachusetts for the last two years at the time of application is eligible. All Artist Fellows/Finalists must be legal residents of Massachusetts when grants are awarded.
The Artist Fellowships Program defines "legal resident" as an individual who fulfills the description of a "full-year resident" as defined in the Massachusetts tax code.
-Any artist who has received an MCC Artist Fellowship in the past five years is ineligible to apply. This includes 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Work samples previously submitted in a successful application (resulting in a full fellowship) may not be re-submitted in a new application.
-Students enrolled in a degree program directly related to the discipline or whose degrees are pending at the time of application are ineligible to apply. Undergraduate students and high school students are ineligible to apply.
-The governor-appointed Mass Cultural Council, its staff, and their immediate family may not apply for Artist Fellowships.
-Applicants should be artists who create original work, as opposed to those who interpret or translate the work of others.
Work completed prior to 2014 in ineligible.
For Fiction/Creative Nonfiction and Choreography: Works in progress are eligible.

All applications and accompanying work samples must be submitted by 11:59 PM on the deadline day. Late submissions will not be accepted. You will receive an email confirmation when your application is submitted. If you do not receive the email confirmation, contact Mass Cultural Council staff.
