Grants of up to $20,000 to New York nonprofit organizations, municipalities, and school districts in eligible counties for a wide range of projects and programs that serve the community. Applicants must submit a letter of intent prior to submitting a full proposal. Grants are made annually in the areas of the arts, culture, education, youth, environment, animals, human services, and capacity building. Eligible applicants are located in and serve the citizens of Chemung and Southeastern Steuben counties.

The Community Foundation funds a wide variety of programs and projects across all program areas. Most grants fall into three categories:

  • Program or Direct Service Grants – for costs associated with implementation of the program
  • Capital Grants – for costs related to building construction, building renovation or capital equipment
  • Organizational Development and Capacity Building Grants - for costs related to activities such as strategic planning, board development, program planning, performance management and evaluation, succession planning or marketing and communications. Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Community Foundation supports a wide variety of nonprofits but does restrict itself to organizations:
- Located in and providing services within Chemung and/or SE Steuben Counties;
- Classified by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service under Section 501(c)(3) of the I.R.S.; or publicly supported organizations such as school districts and municipalities
- Successfully completed the scope of work defined in prior Community Foundation grant application(s) and have submitted any follow-up report due

Proposals from faith-based organizations will only be considered if:
(1) Service benefits all, regardless of religion;
(2) Service provided is not religious in nature; and
(3) There is no proselytizing associated with the service.

Characteristics of eligible grant funded programs include and must demonstrate that they are:
- Open and accessible to the greater community
- Open to all regardless of religious affiliation
- Open and available to low-income or underserved students/participants

The Community Foundation generally does not make grants from unrestricted funds for the following:
- Annual campaigns, special event fundraisers or sponsorships
- Religious purposes
- Political or partisan purposes
- Activities taking place before grant decisions are made
- Trips for schools or clubs
- Deficit funding or debt retirement
- Individuals (except through scholarships for education)

Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss their grant request with the Community Foundation staff before beginning the application process.

The Foundation accepts applications once per year. Organizations may submit one application for funding per grant cycle and must choose either a program or general operating support grant. All applicants must submit a letter explaining the program to be funded and the amount requested – a letter of intent – two weeks before the application deadline.
