Grants to North Carolina nonprofit organizations for innovative projects in the areas of arts and human services. Funding is intended to provide one-time support for a specific project. Funding may be used for equipment, technology, new or existing capital improvements, and program development and execution. This list is not exhaustive and other grant purposes will be considered.

In September 2015, the Pope Foundation announced the creation of two new competitive grants, the Joy W. Pope Memorial Grant in Arts and the Joy W. Pope Memorial Grant in Human Services. Through both grants, the Pope Foundation seeks to foster innovation and model solutions in North Carolina communities. Each grant offers a $100,000 one-time award for a specific project. To date, six organizations (representing Cumberland, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Stokes, and Wilson counties) have received the award.

For this grant, an innovative project does not necessarily mean a new creation, though it may. An innovative project might also address how things could be done better (improving processes, procedures, equipment, facilities, etc.) or differently (expanding what is done to reach new populations). Regardless of the shape an innovative project takes, the end result is a quantifiable gain for the nonprofit and the people it serves.

The arts grant is designed for projects in visual arts, performing arts, and literary arts that serve the greater community.

The human services grant is designed for projects in employment/occupation preparation, skills training, youth development (including childhood literacy/wellness intervention), and crisis services (including abuse, hunger relief, housing, mental health, and addiction among others). Other purposes may be considered, however the human services grant is not intended for medical research.
