Awards to Alabama schools, school districts, and IHEs to recognize outstanding efforts in environmental sustainability. Upcoming conferences are scheduled November 15 and December 6. Nominees will be evaluated on their accomplishments within the following three areas:

1) Pillar I: Reduce environmental impact and costs.

2) Pillar II: Improve the health and wellness of students and staff.

3) Pillar III: Provide effective environmental and sustainability education, incorporating STEM, civic skills and green career pathways.

ED-GRS recognizes schools and districts taking a comprehensive approach to greening their campus or campuses. A comprehensive approach incorporates environmental learning with improving environmental and health impacts.

Applications must include information about the applicant's facility or facilities, health, physical education and safety policies; food service; and environmental and sustainability curriculum.

Applications are accepted from:
-PreK-12 schools
-School districts
-Colleges and universities

To assist with the application process, the Alabama State Department of Education will host four webinars. In order to participate in the webinar, you will need a computer with speakers (microphone is optional). You may use a tablet or smart phone but you must download the WebEx app to your device.

There is a two-step application process. The first step is to complete and submit the appropriate application form to be selected as a nominee by an eligible nominating authority.

Once selected as a nominee by your state or eligible nominating authority, the second step of the process requires signatures for the Nominee Presentation Form that will be sent to the U.S. Department of Education (ED) along with your application.

The application deadline is December 23, 2016.

The Green Ribbon Schools Advisory Committee will select nominees and submit them to the U.S. Department of Education by February 1, 2017.
