Grants of up to $25,000 per year to Minnesota livestock producers to enhance their operations in order to stay competitive in the marketplace. Funding may be used for the construction, improvement, or purchase of buildings and facilities used for livestock production. Funding may also be used to purchase fencing as well as feeding and waste management equipment.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Qualifying producers would be reimbursed ten percent of the first $500,000 of investment, with a minimum investment of $4,000.

This program has a lifetime cap of $50,000.

The maximum available per year is $25,000.

Term of Contract:

The 2018 Livestock Investment Grants will fund expenses incurred between January 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

An eligible applicant is a Minnesota livestock farmer meeting these criteria:
-In good standing with the state of Minnesota (no back taxes),
-Current Minnesota resident or entity authorized to farm in Minnesota, and
-Principal operator of the farm (actively involved in the operation of the farm).

Producers who suffered a loss due to a natural disaster or unintended consequence may also apply.

Minnesota livestock producers who applied for but did not receive a grant in past years are still eligible as long as they haven't reached the lifetime cap.

The grant will not pay for livestock or land purchases or for the cost of debt refinancing.

Pre-Application Information:

The application for the grant program is open from September 15, 2017 to December 15, 2017.

MDA expects to notify applicants in early February. MDA needs 6-8 weeks to review and score all the applications.
