The Hebrew University of Jerusalem – The Lady Davis Fellowship Trust

Deadline Date:

Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Fellowships to USA, Canada and International university professors to conduct research, teach courses, lead seminars, and establish academic connections with faculty members at a university in Israel. The exact breakdown of activities funded by the fellowship will be mutually agreed upon by the professor and the academic sponsor.

The Lady Davis Fellowship Trust was established to provide an opportunity for Visiting Professors, Post-Doctoral Researchers and Doctoral Students from abroad, regardless of nationality, gender or field of scholarship to teach, study and participate in research in Israel at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and at the Technion Institute of Technology in Haifa. It is one of the most distinguished and sought after fellowship programs in the world. In addition, the Lady Davis Fellowship Trust has greatly enriched the Hebrew University and the Technion by constantly introducing exceptional talent into their academic environment and by linking these two institutions, through human bridges, with the world network of science and scholarship.

The Fellowships are intended not only to promote an exchange of ideas and information, but also to cement personal relationships that will provide the basis for an ongoing academic liaison in the future.

Lady Davis Fellowship Trust Visiting Professors are typically expected to teach. The Academic Committee will favourably view requests that include an intention to teach courses or participate in or lead seminars. Visiting Professors also engage in research with their hosts, or interact with other Faculty members. The precise mix of activities will be mutually decided upon by the Visitor and his/her academic sponsor.

In addition:

- The Trust will pay for a roundtrip flight from the fellow's country of origin to Israel and back again.
- Half of the medical insurance, if purchased and paid for in Israel.

GrantWatch ID#: 164768

Estimated Size of Grant:

Visiting Professorships provide ILS 10,000 (per month) and ILS 9,000 for an Associate Professor.

Term of Contract:

Visiting Professorships are 2 to 4 months in length.

Visiting Professors are expected to take up the Fellowship within the period of the Academic year for which they have applied - in other words, between the 1st of October and the 30th of September in the following year providing the period they have chosen is acceptable to their sponsor.

Fellowships may not be deferred from one year to the next.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Applicant must be a Full or an Associate professor.

Visiting Professorships are only awarded to candidates who apply from Universities outside of Israel.

Academic Sponsors:

An academic sponsor does not simply agree to passively supervise the applicant's research from time to time while the applicant is at the Hebrew University. This program expects the sponsor to actively support the applicant's research proposal because it is of a nature that is closely connected to and compliments the sponsor's own particular expertise, and opens up new areas of study which he/she would be interested to pursue. Therefore, the enthusiasm the sponsor can show in the letter of support to actively collaborate on the proposed research will indicate to the Academic Committee the importance he/she attaches to the proposed visit.

A sponsor must have the rank of Lecturer (or above) and must be on the Regular Academic Track at the Hebrew University. An Emeritus Professor may be a co-sponsor but not the main sponsor.

Applicants may have more than one sponsor who is willing to support their application from the same Faculty/Department. If the area of research is inter-disciplinary, they must have at least one sponsor from each Faculty/Department. However, in any case, applicants may only submit one application and they will have to decide which Faculty/Department is their "Major" and channel their application through that Faculty/Department.

Each sponsor is allowed only one candidate for each of the two different Fellowship levels. In other words the same sponsor may support one Visiting Professor and one Post-Doctoral Researcher in any one academic year. Applicants should therefore check that theeir sponsor is not supporting any other candidate at the same level. However if a candidate has been awarded an extension of an extra year to his Fellowship, that same sponsor may support a new candidate in the year of the extension.

Master's Degree Program:

- The Hebrew University does not offer Fellowships to students studying for a Masters Degree Program.

Restrictions:

- Family members accompanying a Fellow will not be eligible for reimbursement of their flight expenses.
- Though the Trust will pay for half of the Fellow's medical insurance if purchased and paid for in Israel, it will not pay for medical insurance that exceeds the standard package paid for by a normally healthy person. The Trust will also not finance any extra medical insurance fees that are connected to pregnancy - those costs will have to be paid for by the Post-Doctoral Fellow.

Pre-Application Information:

The Visiting Professorships Deadline for the academic year from October 1st, 2019 to September 30th, 2020 is November 30th, 2018.

Visiting Professors who have been awarded a Fellowship for 2017-18 may reapply for another providing at least 3 academic years have elapsed between applications. In other words, a Visiting Professor, who has been awarded a Fellowship for 2017-18, may apply again for the year 2021-22.

Sponsors in the Faculties of Science, Medicine, Dentistry and Agriculture will be expected to cover 20% of the total cost of the Fellowship for Visiting Professors.

Prospective candidates must establish contact with the relevant Faculty or Department at the Hebrew University, and ensure that there is a Faculty member willing to sponsor the application. An application will not be processed without a sponsor. There is no special form that a sponsor needs to fill out - a letter will suffice. Please ensure that the sponsor clearly indicates that he/she has no plans to be either on Sabbatical or unpaid leave during the relevant year of the Fellowship.

Fellows who have won another concurrent Fellowship must disclose this to the Trust, whereupon the amount of the award will be reviewed. As a general rule, a concurrent financial award similar to that offered by the Trust will probably entail transferring the Fellowship to another candidate. An award less than that offered by the Trust will probably entail an adjustment to the amount it will offer.
