Grants of up to $10,000 to New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and municipalities to benefit communities in eligible regions. Funding is intended to support specific projects and related expenses that address the needs of residents, including start-up or new programs. Funded projects must serve the NHCF's eight regions of Capital, Lakes, Manchester, Monadnock, Nashua, North Country, Piscataqua, and Upper Valley.

Express Grants are project grants, so they are designed to support a particular project your organization would like to undertake. An Express Grant can only be used for a defined project. Express Grant budget items may include staff or other overhead expenses, but Express Grant funds will be tied to the particular project and its activities as described in the application narrative and budget.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Up to $10,000

Term of Contract:

In general, Express Grants must be expended in one year.

If you know you will need more time to complete the work and expend the grant funds awarded, you may submit a Grant Change Request. It is not unusual to approve an extension of up to six months.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Organizations that do not have public charity status may apply for grants if another public charity acts as a fiscal sponsor. Municipalities and government agencies are eligible.

NHCF welcomes multistate organizations to contact staff to discuss your specific circumstance before applying.

The Foundation will not make a grant through this program to:
- Public and Private Schools
- Hospitals
- Colleges and Universities
- Religious Organizations, except for services that are non-discriminatory, non-sectarian and benefit the larger community
- Organizations exclusively focused on substance use disorder prevention, treatment or recovery support services.

NHCF only makes grants to support charitable work, and thus cannot make Express Grants to (c)(4) or (c)(6) organizations. Under no circumstances can the Foundation support activities such as membership services not available to the general public, electoral work, or other activities that are not considered charitable in nature.

Organizations that received a multi-year unrestricted community grant in 2018, 2019 or 2020 may not apply for an Express grant.
