Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $4,000 to Virginia nonprofit organizations, government agencies, schools, and libraries in eligible regions to address ongoing and emergent community needs. Funding is available this year only for general operating support. Organizations need not apply for a specific project or program and may use the funds at their discretion to best meet the organization’s immediate needs. Programs must benefit residents of the New River Valley (defined as the counties of Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski, and the City of Radford).

The CFNRV recognizes that the COVID-19 pandemic presents significant challenges for NRV organizations, and that flexibility is essential to meeting organizational needs at this time. As such, the 2020 Responsive Grant Program will only offer general operating support grants to be used at the grantee’s discretion. The CFNRV anticipates returning to its programmatic and operating grant opportunities next year.

General operating support is defined as a grant made to further the general mission and work of an organization, rather than for a specific program, project, or purpose. It gives nonprofits flexibility to direct their spending where it is needed most and allows greater focus on achieving an organization’s mission. Nonprofits demonstrating strong management with a clear track record of accomplishments and process for measuring effectiveness will be given priority.

As a way of classifying and organizing grant applications, the CFNRV asks applicants to select a primary area of interest. Program areas include animals, arts and culture, civic affairs, education, environment, health, poverty, and support, parenting, and care. For more details, see the Responsive Grant Program Areas of Interest pdf in the Supporting Documents section below.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The 2020 Responsive Grant Program will only offer general operating support grants of up to $4,000 to be used at the grantee’s discretion.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Registered 501c3 organizations serving the New River Valley (defined as the counties of Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski, and the City of Radford) are eligible for this program, along with units of local government such as a library or school. Please note that organizations physically located outside the NRV may apply provided they can clearly articulate how their programs serve New River Valley residents.

The Foundation is only able to fund 501c3 organizations or units of local government. If the applicant organization does not fall into one of these categories, they are still eligible to apply provided they do so using a fiscal agent.
