Request a Grant Writer

Grants to USA nonprofits for general operating expenses, projects, programs, and capital support that will benefit eligible communities. Specifically, funding is intended for the focus areas of community development, crisis stabilization, emergency and basic needs, and personal and family empowerment.

Please note that grants for capital support are limited and considered on a case-by-case basis.

Tier 1: Emergency and basic needs

Aligned to their business, the Foundation is there to help in an emergency. They will partner with organizations that provide life's necessities.

Tier 2: Crisis stabilization

Before a crisis happens or after one hits, the Foundation holds the safety net. The Foundation partners with organizations that provide resources to prevent crises or help pick up the pieces after one occurs.

Tier 3: Personal and family empowerment

The Foundation helps at-risk youth and families in poverty situations who need tools and resources to advance their lives. The Foundation partners with organizations that assist individuals in becoming productive members of society.

Tier 4: Community enrichment

The Foundation understands the well-being of a community affects all who live in it. They will partner with organizations that contribute to the overall quality of life in a community.

The Nationwide Foundation accepts applications from nonprofits in the following communities. Emphasis is placed on Tier 1 and Tier 2 organizations within in these communities:

- Brea/Orange County and Sacramento, CA
- Columbus (Metro), OH
- Denver, CO
- Des Moines, IA
- Gainesville, FL
- Harleysville and Harrisburg, PA
- Raleigh (Metro), NC
- San Antonio, TX
- Scottsdale/Phoenix (Metro), AZ
- Wausau, WI

Organizations must be tax-exempt under paragraph 501(C)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.

The Nationwide Foundation accepts applications from nonprofits in the following communities:

Brea/Orange County and Sacramento, CA
- Columbus (Metro), OH
- Denver, CO
- Des Moines, IA
- Gainesville, FL
- Harleysville and Harrisburg, PA
- Raleigh (Metro), NC
- San Antonio, TX
- Scottsdale/Phoenix (Metro), AZ
- Wausau, WI

Not Funded:

- Organizations that, in their constitution discriminate against a person or group on the basis of race, color, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, disability, genetic information, religion, national origin, ancestry, veteran status, marital status or any other characteristic protected by law

- Veterans, labor, religious or fraternal groups (except when these groups provide needed services to the community at large)

- Groups or organizations that will re-grant the foundation’s gifts to other organizations or individuals (except United Way)

- Public or private primary or secondary schools

- Athletic events or teams, bands, and choirs

- Individuals for any purpose

- Lobbying activities

- Fund-raising events such as walk-a-thons, telethons, and sponsorships

- Debt-reduction or retirement campaigns

- Endowment campaigns

- Requests to support travel

- National organizations (unless the applicant is a local branch or chapter providing direct services)

As a general policy, because the foundation matches their associates’ United Way contributions dollar for dollar, organizations that receive support from United Way are ineligible to receive general operating support. But they may be considered for project and capital grants.

The deadline for submitting a 2018 grant application is September 1, 2017, at 11:59 PM EDT.

Multiple grant proposals from one organization will not be accepted.

If you don't receive an email confirmation after online submission, your application was not properly submitted and you should email the office to confirm that your grant application was received. Please keep your email confirmation as a record of proof that your application was submitted.

Grant recipients will be notified by March 31, 2018.
