Grant Description
Grants to Maine nonprofit organizations for charitable and educational community projects in eligible regions. A Letter of Intent must be submitted prior to applying. Funding is intended to support projects focused on the needs of children, families, and women. Applicants must be located in Bath, Brunswick, Freeport, Harpswell, Phippsburg, Topsham, Woolwich, or Wiscasset.

The Maine Women’s Giving Tree (MWGT) is a charitable organization with the mission to improve the lives of people in the region through collective giving to qualified non-profit organizations that focus on the needs of women, children and families. 

MWGT is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes, which include the making of grant distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations as described under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. 

Applicants must:

  • Meet MWGT’s mission
  • Serve women, children, and families in the communities listed in the mission statement
  • Address an important need to maximize the impact of MWGT funds in the community
  • Articulate clear goals, objectives, and measurable outcomes

Additional Eligibility Criteria
Applicant organizations must provide certification of current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.

MWGT does not fund:

- Organizational endowments
- Political activities or PACs
- Religious or faith-based organizations
- Event tickets or sponsorship, annual fundraising drives or events
- Deficit reduction
- Organizations that discriminate on the basis of race, creed, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, or national origin
- Capital improvements or building maintenance
- Indirect costs (costs of running the organization but not directly related to the proposed project)

Pre-Application Information
A one-page Letter of Intent to submit a grant proposal must be received by email on or before 5 pm on December 1, 2022. Letters of Intent will be evaluated, and a response will be sent to the principal contact person on December 15, 2022.

All grant applications must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on February 28, 2023.

The Grants Committee recommendations are presented to and voted on by the entire membership at a special meeting in May. Every organization that submitted an application then receives written notification of the decision.

Proposals must focus on projects or programs that benefit women, children and families in Bath, Brunswick, Freeport, Harpswell, Phippsburg, Topsham, West Bath, Woolwich, and Wiscasset.

Organizations may apply for only one grant a year.

Term of Contract
Organizations must expend all grant funds within 12 months of receipt.
