Grants of $10,000 to teams of USA nonprofits and Native American youth for entrepreneurial projects that will benefit the local Native American community. Sponsoring nonprofits will mentor one Native American youth through the process of completing the project.

Running Strong provides ten $10,000 grants each year to community non-profits who will mentor a young Dreamstarter and work with them to implement a project inspired by the young person’s dream for her or his community. Beginning October 14, teams of one nonprofit organization and one Native American youth should work together to complete a Dreamstarter application outlining their idea, its funding needs, and how it will benefit youth.

Successful Dreamstarter Applicants will receive an “I am a Dreamstarter” Award of $500 after the successful completion of the grant period.

Each year, Dreamstarter grants will be awarded to projects addressing a different theme. The themes are:
Year 1 (2015-2016): Wellness
Year 2 (2016-2017): Arts & Culture
Year 3 (2017-2018): Education
Year 4 (2018-2019): Science & the Environment
Year 5 (2019-2020): Entrepreneurship

Estimated Size of Grant:

Running Strong will award ten $10,000 Dreamstarter grants. In addition to the grant, each team will be allotted $2,000 for transportation to/from Dreamstarter Academy and other projcet-related travel. The youth applicant of each Dreamstarter team will also receive an additional $500 “I am a Dreamstarter” award upon the successful completion of the grant period.

Term of Contract:

The grant year begins in April 2019 and projects must be completed by June 30, 2019.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

American Indian Youth Dreamstarters must:

- Be between the ages of 14 and 30 at the time of application deadline,
- Be an enrolled member of a current or terminated federal/state Indian Nation and able to provide documentation.
- Complete the application together with their Mentor Organization,
- Agree to be featured by name in photos, videos, and written stories on the Running Strong website and other materials;
- Participate in the four-day Dreamstarter Academy training program;
- Produce at least one video and 2 blog posts with photographs during the grant period, with the help of Running Strong staff;
- Provide monthly updates on the progress of the Dreamstarter project; and
- Complete a final report and evaluation with their Mentor Organization at the end of the project.

Dreamstarter Mentor Organizations must:

- Be a 501(c)3 or 7871 non-profit organization or school serving one or more American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian communities in the United States;
- Apply together with an eligible young American Indian Dreamstarter applicant;
- Assign a staff member to mentor the youth Dreamstarter participant throughout the grant period; including participation in the four-day Dreamstarter Academy training program;
- Agree to be featured by organization and staffer’s name in photos, videos, and written stories on the Running Strong website and other materials;
- Supervise and implement the Dreamstarter-funded project, including management of the $10,000 grant award;
- Assist the youth Dreamstarter participant in producing at least one video and 2 blog posts with photographs,
- Provide monthly updates on the progress of the Dreamstarter project; and
- Complete a final report and evaluation at the end of the project.

Projects that do not relate to the annual theme; individual scholarships; and projects that do not involve the input of Native youth are not eligible for Dreamstarter funding.

Important Dates for Dreamstarter Year 5: 2019-2020 (Entrepreneurs):

- 10/14/18: Dreamstarter Year 5: Entrepreneurs Applications open

- 11/14/18: Online question & answer chat with Running Strong Staff & past Dreamstarters

- 12/15/18: Complete Dreamstarter applications due by 6:00pm EST via email or postmarked by that date.

- 3/1/19: Successful applicants will be notified.

- 4/19: Dreamstarter Academy will be held during in Washington, DC. All successful applicants and their mentor from the organization must attend. Grant year begins.

- 11/15/19: Program Update due

- 6/30/20: Projects must be completed, all funds must be spent.

A $500 Dreamstarter award granted to each Dreamstarter once all necessary reporting is received from the Dreamstarter mentor organization

- 8/15/20: Final Grant Report due
