Grants to Washington farms in eligible regions for collaborative projects that promote sustainable agriculture. Priority is given to projects in the areas of renewable energy, season extension, supporting underserved farmers, climate adaptation or resilient farming practices, and land access or long-term land tenure. Additional agricultural projects may be considered if excess funds are available. The Farm Fund is designed to support multi-farm collaborations in Whatcom and Skagit counties.

The Farm Fund works to strengthen the market for sustainable agriculture in Whatcom County, encourage ecological and socially responsible farmland stewardship, and to increase access to, and awareness of healthy food grown, raised, or processed by local producers. Proposed projects should address one of the following:

  • Build the market and/or strengthen infrastructure for local farmsĀ
  • Encourage ecological and socially responsible stewardship of local farmland
  • Develop innovative models that can advance the local farming community
  • Increase community access to, and awareness of healthy, organic food grown by local producers
  • Benefit the Co-op membership

Examples of grant-funded projects: business opportunities for multiple local farms (not just one), increasing access to local seed and grain, product trials, shared sheep shearing tools and training, workshops, programs for new farmers, non-GMO seed testing, farmers markets, a food bank program that helps farms buy seeds in exchange for produce, food hubs, multi-farm collaborations, farmland access projects, cooperative development, and product development.
