Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $5,000 to Nova Scotia nonprofit and community organizations for initiatives to prevent violence. Funding is intended to support innovative projects that advance primary prevention approaches, improve research and evaluation, encourage best practices, assist marginalized populations, improve the use of technology, and assist youth groups in peer outreach.

Proposals should show how the project will help prevent sexual violence in the community or school and that the idea is new, creative, innovative, has never been tried before in the area and/or has never happened before at all

Applicants will have a better chance of getting a grant if their idea does at least one of the following:

  • Is led by and for the following communities: African Nova Scotian, Indigenous, Immigrant, Persons with Disabilities, LGBTQIA2S+
  • Uses technology
  • Includes peer-to-peer approaches.
  • Engages youth, where youth are involved in leadership, decision making, planning and organizing.

Funded projects are working towards some of the following outcomes:

  • Better understanding of healthy relationships and norms.
  • Increased engagement of men and boys in sexual violence prevention work.
  • Youth have a clearer understanding of what consent is and why it is important.
  • Decrease in the hypersexualization of women and girls.
  • Increase in positive, non-violent perceptions of masculinity.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The maximum amount that can be requested is $5,000.

Term of Contract:

This is a one year grant only; it is not renewable.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Groups applying for funding must be registered and in good standing with the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stocks Companies, and have existed for a minimum of 2 years.

For those who do not meet the above criteria, a community partner is required:

- Where community partners are involved, the liability for the funds rests with the community partner.
- There is no conflict if an organization wishes to submit an application as well as be a community partner to youth or a non-registered group.

Pre-Application Information:

The deadline to apply for a Prevention Innovation Grant is December 13, 2019, 5pm.

Applications can be submitted via mail or email. If mailed, the application must be postmarked by December 13th, 2019.

You will know if you get a grant by March 31st, 2020.
