The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region - Bender Family Foundation
Grants ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 to Albany, New York nonprofit organizations for projects and programs that promote and preserve the education, environment, history, arts and culture of the state's Capital Region. Preference is given to projects in the City and County of Albany, however, the area within a radius of no more than 30 miles measured from the site of the present New York State Capitol building (State Street, Albany) will also be considered.
The Foundation will consider requests for grants to support capital campaigns and capital expenditures.

Grants usually range between $5,000 and $10,000.
The Foundation will consider multi-year grants when appropriate.
Organizations must qualify under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code as a nonprofit organization or operate under the fiscal sponsorship of a qualifying nonprofit organization.
The Foundation accepts proposals from organizations whose directors are active as volunteers, directors or donors; priority is given to projects and programs in the City and County of Albany.
Grants will not be made to the same organization in consecutive years. The Foundation does not make grants to individuals or to support annual fund drives.
If an organization was awarded a grant in 2018, please do not apply for new Bender Family Foundation funding until 2020. If an organization is awarded a grant in 2019, the organization will be eligible to apply for new Bender Family Foundation funding in 2021.
The Foundation accepts proposals from organizations where its directors are active as volunteers, directors or donors.
The following are generally not eligible for competitive grants:
- Programs that the Community Foundation will have to operate;
- Scholarship or fellowship programs;
- Political, governmental or religious activities;
- Conferences and/or speakers’ expenses;
- Advertisements in programs, journals or other publications;
- Special events and other fundraising events;
- Annual appeals or membership contributions.
Pre-application questionnaires are due March 14, 2019.
The applicant's responses to the questionnaire will determine whether the applicant is invited to submit a formal application. Please be thorough and clear about the project and its benefits.
If the pre-application questionnaire is accepted, the Trustees will notify the applicant via email. The Foundation also will send a link to the formal grant application. Format applications will be due May-June 2019 (specific due date will be indicated on the application). Final decisions will be made in August 2019.
Foundation Trustees will review and discuss all complete pre-application questionnaires, as well as subsequent formal applications. If the Foundation is unfamiliar with the organization, the Foundation will request a site visit. During that visit, the Foundation will ask that the applicant provide the Foundation with the following: brochures, annual reports or other descriptive materials (if available); and descriptions of key staff, including qualifications.
