The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region - Bender Family Foundation
Grants ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 to Albany, New York nonprofit organizations for projects and programs that foster and preserve the arts, culture, education, history, and environment of the Capital Region. Preference is given to projects in the City and County of Albany, however, the area within a radius of no more than 60 miles measured from the site of the present New York State Capitol building will also be considered.
The Foundation awards challenge grants and permits the grants to be used as matching funds for other foundation grants. The Foundation gives priority to Albany County projects. The Foundation accepts requests for grants to support capital campaigns and capital expenditures.

The Foundation will consider multi-year grants when appropriate.
Organizations must qualify under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code as a nonprofit organization or operate under the fiscal sponsorship of a qualifying nonprofit organization.
Preference is given to projects in the City and County of Albany; however, the area within a radius of no more than 60 miles measured from the site of the present New York State Capitol building will also be considered.
If an organization was awarded a grant in 2017, please do not apply for new Bender Family Foundation funding until 2019. If an organization is awarded a grant in 2018, the organization will be eligible to apply for new Bender Family Foundation funding in 2020.
The Foundation accepts proposals from organizations where its directors are active as volunteers, directors or donors.
The following are generally not eligible for competitive grants:
- Programs that the Community Foundation will have to operate;
- Scholarship or fellowship programs;
- Political, governmental or religious activities;
- Conferences and/or speakers’ expenses;
- Advertisements in programs, journals or other publications;
- Special events and other fundraising events;
- Annual appeals or membership contributions.
The Bender Family Foundation will not consider grant proposals which do not follow the guidelines.
- Pre-application questionnaires are due March 15, 2018, and will be reviewed by June 30, 2018.
- Final decisions on formal applications will be completed by September.
- Grant awards will be distributed in June.
Please note: The applicant's responses to this questionnaire will determine whether the applicant is invited to submit a formal application. Please be thorough and clear about the project and its benefits.
If the pre-application questionnaire is accepted, the Trustees will notify the applicant via email. The Foundation also will send a link to the formal grant application with its due date indicated. Formal applications typically are due back within approximately 6 weeks.
Foundation Trustees will review and discuss all complete pre-application questionnaires, as well as subsequent formal applications. If the Foundation is unfamiliar with the organization, the Foundation will request a site visit. During that visit, the Foundation will ask that the applicant provide the Foundation with the following: brochures, annual reports or other descriptive materials (if available); and descriptions of key staff, including qualifications.
