Harold K.L. Castle Foundation
11/15/17 - Deadline for submission of full proposal; Online Inquiry forms may be submitted at any time during the year. Inquiries for Capital Grants will be accepted until 10/01/17.
Grants to Hawaii nonprofit organizations and public schools to benefit state residents in the areas of PreK-12 education, community strengthening, and marine resources conservation. Applicants must submit an inquiry form in advance of the deadline. The Foundation primarily supports specific projects rather than general ongoing costs, with the exception of those organizations the Foundation deems critical to the overall success of its strategies.
The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation makes grants to organizations working in one or more of the three strategic priority areas:
-Public Education Redesign and Enhancement (PreK-12th grade)
-Nearshore Marine Resource Conservation (for waters surrounding the main Hawaiian Islands)
-Strengthening the Communities of Windward O‘ahu
The Foundation occasionally chooses to fund outside these areas, at its discretion. Such grants are increasingly rare, limited, and always initiated by the Foundation.
GrantWatch ID#: 167662
Funding depends on the size of the project, the anticipated impact, and other funding available for the project. The average grant size is approximately $110,000, but grants range from $100 to $4 million.
Nonprofit organizations (recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) and 509(a) public charity) or public schools working to advance one of the three strategic priority areas listed above are eligible.
The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation only funds organizations that serve the people of Hawaii.
The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation does not make grants to individuals or businesses.
Proposals are not considered for:
-Individuals or businesses
-Ongoing operating expenses (unless it is a new project or organization needing start-up funding)
-Annual fund drives
-Sponsorships, special events, dinners, galas
-Organizations based outside of Hawaii
-Projects taking place outside Hawaii that do not benefit Hawaii
The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation generally prefers not to be the only funder of a given project.
All prospective grant applicants must submit an Online Inquiry Form, which is the first step in requesting funds from the foundation.
Online Inquiry Forms will be reviewed by foundation staff on a rolling basis, so they may be submitted at any time during the year. Within one month of receipt of your Online Inquiry Form, the Foundation will contact you to request more information, invite you to submit a full proposal, or inform you that the foundation will be unable to consider a full proposal due to limited resources and/or a mismatch with foundation priorities.
If invited to submit a full proposal, the 2017 deadlines are: January 24th, April 19th, August 15th or November 15th.
The directors' meeting dates for 2017 are: February 24th, May 19th, September 15th, and December 15th.
You will be informed of the director’s actions within one week.
Decisions on all requests for capital grants are made annually at the December Directors’ meeting. Online inquiries for capital grants will be accepted in 2017 from August 1, 2017 through October 1, 2017.
