Grants of up to $12,000 and in-kind assistance to Arkansas nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and government agencies for forestry projects. Funding is intended to support environmental programs that develop, enhance, and promote urban and community trees and forests.

The Forestry Division’s Urban & Community Forestry (UCF) Program objectives are to:

  • Promote the importance of tree care and tree management to ensure communities maintain sustainable forests for community health
  • Enhance the technical skills of individuals involved in the planning, development, and maintenance of urban & community forests.
  • Promote the restoration of green space with low-impact development projects
  • Broaden the public’s understanding of tree cover benefits through demonstration projects
  • Provide educational programs and technical assistance to state and local organizations
  • Develop productive urban landscapes to improve water and air quality, conserve energy, reduce the heat island effect, and provide a wide range of social, economic, and environmental benefits.

Examples of eligible projects include:

  • Community tree inventories and management plans
  • Parking lot improvements for stormwater runoff
  • Tree-friendly streets (allowing for root space and canopy growth, adding tree grates, etc.)
  • Park improvements to help reduce sun exposure and cool the air
  • Improving tree health with tree maintenance and protection plans, soil amendments, mulching, professional pruning and restoration, watering bags and/or irrigation, etc.
  • Greenway development planning and urban stream restoration (including demonstration areas, feasibility studies, maps, etc.)
  • Communications materials that increase public awareness of the benefits of urban forests
  • Education and training for tree care workers, volunteers, and the public.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The allowable grant expenditures for local program development projects have a maximum limit of $12,000 federal dollars. The Grant Review Committee may waive the maximum allowable grant award for an exceptional proposal.

Term of Contract:

Projects funded in the 2021 grant cycle must be completed by August 31, 2023.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible recipients must be affiliated with a government entity, non-profit organization, or an educational institution, and must meet all federal regulations, requirements, and standards.

Pre-Application Information:

The Forestry Division is now accepting 2021 Urban & Community Forestry (U&CF) Grant applications through September 13, 2021. All applications must be emailed or postmarked by the deadline.

Recipients will be notified by September 24, 2021.

The maximum federal cost share of any project is 50% of the total expenditures for the project. The non-federal match may be cash, services, or in-kind contributions.
