Grant Description
Grants of up to $20,000 for USA nonprofit equine sanctuaries that rescue, rehabilitate, place for adoption, and/or offer sanctuary to retired race horses for programs leading to retired horse adoptions, facility improvements, medical make-ready, and other activities that will save the lives of injured and old race horses.

Eligible Retiree Programs for Support:

- Adoption programs that place retired broodmares and other cast-offs from the breeding/racing industry
- Training programs that improve adoption rates
- Capital improvement grants to expand capacity, improve efficiency, or build a training arena
- Lay-up grants to allow injured retirees time to heal
- Medical make-ready to include support for items such as gelding, therapeutic shoeing, surgeries to repair racing-related injuries and collaborative programs with veterinary colleges
- Sanctuary enrichment grants for long-term residents
- Model adoption programs/innovative adoption promotions

Eligibility
  • Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS
  • Others (see text field entitled "Additional Eligibility Criteria" for clarification)

Additional Eligibility Criteria
- Established 501(c)(3) equine rescues and sanctuaries located within the United States, in good standing with the ASPCA, including no overdue progress or other reporting requirements from previous grants
- Must participate in the rehabilitation and placement of 10 or more retired race horses (of any breed) or offer sanctuary to 25 or more retirees annually
- Preference will be given to those programs that forbid the breeding of retired racers when all other considerations are equal
- Preference will be given to GFAS- or TAA-accredited organizations when all other considerations are equal
- Must take back their returns when adoptions fail for whatever reason

Estimated Size of Grant
Grants generally range from $3,000-$20,000. Requests should not exceed 10% of an organization’s annual budget.

Term of Contract
Grants are typically for one year or under. Applicants will be notified of a funding decision by July 1, 2016.
