Grants ranging from $10,000 to $25,000 per year to Pennsylvania nonprofit organizations in the Philadelphia area for programs and services that help children, adults, and families in need obtain physical and mental health care and related human services, including food, shelter, clothing, and education. Strong priority will be given to applications in Philadelphia County. Funding can be requested for general operating support or for specific program/project support.

The Foundation is interested in encouraging practical, caring solutions to community problems by supporting preventive and direct service efforts. The Patricia Kind Family Foundation operates no programs of its own, but performs its mission by funding proven approaches from nonprofit organizations. The Foundation is especially committed to helping individuals and families who struggle daily with the effects of poverty.

Priority will be given to smaller organizations with budgets under $1 million. Organizations are encouraged to apply for multi-year general operating support funds.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Most giving is in the range of $10,000 to $25,000 per year.

Term of Contract:

Most giving is provided for a one to three year period.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Foundation grants are made to organizations operating in the Philadelphia area that are tax exempt under Section 501c(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Organizations or programs should be operating for at least one year.

Although the Foundation has funded programs in the four counties surrounding Philadelphia in the past – Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery – they are now focusing support specifically to organizations in Philadelphia County. The Summer/Fall 2019 application (opening August 1st) will be the last cycle that programs operating in these four counties will be eligible to apply for possible funding.

Excluded from the Foundation’s funding priorities are grants in direct support of individuals, i.e., scholarships or fellowships; endowments; and capital projects.

Pre-Application Information:

The Patricia Kind Family Foundation has two application cycles each year. The next application deadline is September 8, 2019. Applications are only accepted online. The online application will close at midnight on the deadline date.

Winter/Spring Cycle:
- Online application is open from December 1 - January 15.
- February - May: Proposals are reviewed and site visits scheduled
- June: Final funding decisions are made
- July: Notification letters mailed

Summer/Fall Cycle:
- Online application is open from August 1 to September 8
- October - December: Proposals are reviewed and site visits scheduled
- January 2020: Final funding decisions are made at Board meeting
- February 2020: Notification letters mailed

Site visits are done on all programs selected for possible funding and the Trustees want to see the program “in action”. Please keep this in mind when selecting which application cycle to use and note the months during each cycle that site visits are scheduled. Alternate site visit arrangements can be made for organizations running programs during the summer months.

All applicants are contacted during the review process. After the application cycle closes and the application has been fully reviewed you will be contacted as to the status, either to schedule a site visit for further evaluation or notification that the proposal was not selected for funding. This process will take three to five weeks after the deadline.

Grantees must wait one year after completion of a grant before being eligible to submit a new request. Applicants who are denied funding are asked to wait at least one year before reapplying.
