NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD)
Opportunity to New York City nonprofit organizations, corporations, and government agencies to offer summer work opportunities to high school and college students. Participating organizations may offer positions to skilled youth who have been accepted to the program. Applicants are advised to submit a sign-up form in advance of the applciation. Students may work on special projects and provide administrative support to their assigned department.
Ladders for Leaders gives students a unique opportunity to explore their interests and discover new ones through:
-Pre-employment Training: Receive help with résumé and cover letter writing, and interviewing skills. Learn essential workplace readiness skills and business etiquette.
-Paid Summer Internships: Paid internship opportunities available in a variety of industries to accommodate student interests.
-Opportunity to join the growing Alumni Network: Broad network of alumni, post-internship opportunities and networking events open only to past participants of the program.
The NYC Ladders for Leaders program, a component of the Summer Youth Employment Program, launched in 2006, offers students the opportunity to participate in summer internships at businesses throughout New York City where they gain firsthand experience in a variety of disciplines.
All internships are paid and the salaries are set at employer’s discretion at New York State minimum wage or higher.
Program participants are:
-Outstanding students from top high schools and colleges
-New York City residents between the ages of 16 and 22
-Trained to work in a professional work environment
-Skilled in the use of technology and social media
-Diverse representing various cultural and educational backgrounds
Your company can support the program by:
-Providing paid professional internship opportunities
-Donating funds to support program costs and
-Offering in-kind resources
Program partners provide interns with meaningful and supervised work experiences including but not limited to the following:
-Incorporating Ladders interns into existing summer internship programs
-Assigning special projects in addition to day to day responsibilities
-Exposing their interns to client meetings, participating in a department-wide activities, field trips, and team building opportunities
-Provide opportunities for interns to hold informational interviews with Senior Managers
-Provide administrative support to their assigned departments

The program typically starts the first week in July and participants work 25-40 hours per week for a minimum of 6 weeks. However, many employers have extended offers to their interns to continue on past the 6 weeks.
Ladders for Leaders employers include corporations, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies in New York City.
The Sign-Up form will provide staff with basic information regarding your intern recruitment needs and timeline. A staff member from DYCD will reach out to you in a timely manner to discuss next steps.
