Grants typically ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies for projects and programs to improve the lives of local children and youth. Funding priority will be given to programs which encourage economic opportunity or upward mobility for children in the county.

Foundation initiatives focused on children and youth have been instrumental in leveraging broad support for programs that benefit young people.

As part of its grantmaking, the Children and Youth Committee is dedicated to fostering a landscape of economic opportunity for all children.

Specific investment and results areas include:
Early Childhood (Birth to Kindergarten):
- Children have access to safe and enriching quality early care and education and enter school ready to learn.
- Parents and caregivers have the tools, resources, and information to nurture their children and provide experiences that promote school readiness.
- The early care and education workforce has the resources and professional development opportunities to provide quality care and experiences for children from birth through age five.

College and Career Readiness (Elementary School to Age 24)

Estimated Size of Grant:

The Foundation typically awards grants between $10,000 - $50,000 to eligible organizations. However, actual award amounts will be determined based on merit of the project and available funds.

Term of Contract:

Grants are one year in duration.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grants must be awarded to eligible organizations including 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, congregations, governmental and educational institutions for projects that will serve residents of Mecklenburg County. If the organization conducting the project is not an eligible organization, a grant can be applied for under the fiscal sponsorship of an eligible organization.

Areas Not Typically Funded
- Capital requests
- Debt retirement/deficit funding or expenses incurred prior to grant award decisions
- Direct support of individuals (e.g. scholarships, hardship)
- Duplication of existing programs or services by new organizations
- Endowment funds
- General operating support
- Travel and conferences
- Publication of books
- Projects that are typically the funding responsibility of federal, state or local government
- Projects that promote political or religious views
- Political or lobbying activities
- Sponsorships or fundraisers

Pre-Application Information:

The grant cycle for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Community Foundation’s Children and Youth Grants Program opens on March 15, and closes on April 26. Award notifications will be sent out mid-June.
