Grants of up to $6,000 to Vermont nonprofit organizations for arts and creative programming in early childhood education. Funding is intended to support projects and to build the capacity of organizations that provide arts programming to young children. Eligible applicants are nonprofits, such as arts or social service organizations, providing Head Start classes.

Arts-integrated instruction plays an important role in children's academic, social, and emotional growth. The impact is specifically meaningful in working with children living in poverty, dual-language learners, and those with cognitive or behavioral challenges.

The Head Start Arts Integration Program (HSAIP) supports arts-integrated experiences for early education students and teachers in Head Start classrooms. The Vermont Arts Council is accepting proposals from organizations to provide arts-based and creative programming for children and families enrolled in Head Start
and/or to build the capacity of existing arts partnerships with Head Start and/or regional organizations
serving children enrolled in Head Start.

Successful applicants will partner with at least one regional Head Start program to deliver arts-integrated experiences These experiences may, for example, be artist residencies of one or more days that:

  • Support children in reaching arts and nonarts curriculum outcomes
  • Support classroom teachers beyond the timeframe of the grant
  • Employ a teaching artist who is experienced in early childhood settings and a master of the arts discipline at the heart of the instruction
  • Promote opportunities for interaction, collaboration, and/or planning between teaching artists and the classroom teachers

Head Start Arts Integration Grants support students and teachers in early arts education. Successful proposals:

  • Include a partnership a with at least one of Vermont’s regional Head Start programs
  • Engage children in the arts and connect children with artists
  • Employ a teaching artist(s) to lead arts or arts-integrated activities in at least one Head Start classroom
  • Directly or indirectly bring high-quality creative experiences into Head Start classrooms
  • Are designed to actively engage classroom teachers and support teachers beyond the project timeline
  • Demonstrate a reasonable budget and well-planned timeline
  • Have a system of evaluation in place

Estimated Size of Grant:

Organizations may submit a request up to $6,000.

Term of Contract:

Fundable project activities take place between January 1, 2022, and August 31, 2022.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The applicant must be a Vermont nonprofit with 501(c)(3) status, such as an arts organization or social service organization providing Head Start classes, that:
- Has been in operation for at least one year prior to submitting a proposal
- Has a Dun and Bradstreet number

Who May Not Apply or Receive Funding
- Organizations that have received any other Arts Council grant in FY2022 to support the same project
- Organizations that have previously received Arts Council grants and have not completed required reporting
