Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL)
Award to a USA foreign language teacher from a Northeast state to recognize outstanding achievements in the profession. The winner and runners-up will be selected from the affiliate candidates in the following States: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Virginia, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, DC, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia.
Each year, the Northeast Conference chooses its Teacher of the Year from among the candidates selected by the states in the Northeast region. This individual then represents the organization at the National Language Teacher of the Year competition at the ACTFL Conference in November.
The award for the National Language Teacher of the Year is intended to elevate the status and the public profile of the language teaching profession at the state, regional and national levels by recognizing the individuals chosen for this award.
Candidates for state, regional, or national Language Teacher of the Year (TOY) must be full-time world language Pre-K-12 teachers or Postsecondary instructors or professors. There is an expectation of teaching for at least two additional years.
Candidates nominated by state organizations or selected by regional organizations must meet the following requirements:
-Candidates must spend at least 50% of their teaching duty in direct teaching of languages (with no more than half of the language teaching percentage being the teaching of English Language Learners).
-Candidates cannot at the time of such nomination or selection be also nominated for a position on the ACTFL Board of Directors nor nominated for an award given by ACTFL for the year in which that candidate would be placed in eligibility for the ACTFL National Language Teacher of the Year.
Phase I - Portfolio Development and Submission:
Each state’s foreign language association or other designated state organization is invited to submit to that state’s regional language organization a nomination form and accompanying portfolio for one (1) state-sponsored foreign language teacher of the year candidate.
Each state may submit one (1) candidate. States who participate in more than one (1) regional conference may submit a candidate to only one (1) regional organization. While states and regionals have autonomy to change the selection process, regional candidates must submit all the required documents for the national dossier.
The deadline to submit applications to to NECTFL is January 5, 2017.
Phase II - National Finalists:
Each regional finalist must attend the ACTFL Annual Convention in order to complete a personal interview with the national selection committee. During this interview, finalists will be asked to discuss pertinent topics, e.g., culture in the classroom, professional involvement, value of language learning, and offer in the form of a mock press conference or mock address to a civic group the first three to five minutes of a ten (10) minute presentation on an issue of current interest in national foreign language policy.
The Regional Winner (National Finalist) will be considered for the National Teacher of the Year award. The deadline to submit applications to ACTFL is May 31, 2017.
