Awards to Kentucky PreK-12 teachers to recognize outstanding contributions to the quality of classroom education. Nominations are currently being accepted on behalf of teachers who demonstrate strong communication skills, creativity and originality in their teaching methods, community involvement, a commitment to professional development, and educational accomplishments and contributions.

The Kentucky Teacher of the Year is selected through a three-tiered process that includes: (1) application judging; (2) classroom teaching; and (3) oral interview.

Applicants will be evaluated on the following criteria:
-Creativity and Originality - the applicant demonstrates successful use of original or innovative teaching methods.
-Communication Skills - The applicant demonstrates strong capability as a communicator through an application free of grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors; and through oral formats including classroom observation and personal interviews.
-Education Contributions/Accomplishments - the applicant demonstrates the ability to make significant contributions to education.
-Professional Development - the applicant demonstrates professional commitment by consistently upgrading teaching skills and maintaining awareness of educational trends and issues.
-Community Involvement - the applicant demonstrates commitment to community activities.

The selected Kentucky Teacher of the Year will represent the state in the National Teacher of the Year competition.

Number of Grants:

The program recognizes 24 Valvoline Achievement Awards winners from eight regions of the state. From this group, three are recognized as the state Elementary, Middle and High School Teacher of the Year. These finalists then compete for the overall Kentucky Teacher of the Year.

Estimated Size of Grant:

$10,000 and a unique cameo glass bowl are awarded to the overall Kentucky Teacher of the Year. In addition, the Department of Education provides a professional sabbatical opportunity or a classroom grant. Cash awards of $3,000 each and a cameo glass vase are presented to the other Kentucky Teacher of the Year finalists. The remaining 21 regional finalists each receive cash awards of $500 and a framed certificate.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

To participate in the Kentucky Teacher of the Year Program, a teacher must have at least three years of classroom teaching experience and spend seventy-five percent of the day in the teaching and instruction of students.

A candidate should teach in a state-approved or accredited school, prekindergarten through grade 12, and plan to continue in an active teaching status.

Teachers who have been recognized as a Teacher Achievement Award winner at least twice over a five-year consecutive period are ineligible to apply.

Pre-Application Information:

Teachers may be nominated by students, parents, teaching peers, principals, superintendents or anyone from the community who has an interest in honoring an outstanding educator.

Nominations may be submitted electronically and are due by February 15.

All nominated teachers are required to complete a formal application, which must be postmarked by March 1. Judging will take place in March by a blue ribbon panel of education professionals from around the state; as many as 24 Valvoline Teacher Achievement Award winners will be announced in the spring.

Following site visits with nine semifinalists in April and personal interviews with the top three candidates, the Kentucky Teacher of the Year will be announced in Frankfort.

At that time, all 24 teachers will be honored with cash awards and other mementos.
