Grants to North Carolina K-12 teachers for innovative activities that enhance the learning experiences of students in the classroom. Funds will support projects that employ creative teaching methods in areas that include, but are not limited to, art, music, reading, history, math, technology, science, and engineering.

Grants are awarded annually by the State’s electric cooperatives for projects that improve classroom instruction. 

To be considered for a grant, the proposed project must meet the following criteria:

  • Be reviewed and approved by your principal or supervisor
  • Directly involve and provide ongoing benefits to students
  • Seek to achieve clearly defined goals and learning objectives
  • Use innovative and creative teaching methods
  • Feature measurable results that can be evaluated upon completion

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

North Carolina teachers in K-12 classrooms statewide may apply.

Educators may apply as individuals or as a team.

Cooperatives award Bright Ideas grants to schools within their service territory; however, several also award grants to schools outside of their coverage area. See School Search at

The decision to fund grants for private or charter schools is up to the sponsoring cooperative’s discretion. Contact your local electric cooperative to find out if private or charter schools in your area are eligible to receive funding through the Bright Ideas program.

Funding cannot be used for salaries or professional development.

- April 1: 2020 Application Period Opens
Electric cooperatives across the state start accepting online applications.

- August 15: Early Bird Deadline
Submit your application on or before this date and be entered to win one of five $100 Visa gift cards.

- September 15: 2020 Application Period Closes
The final application deadline for most sponsoring co-ops is Sept. 15, with the exception of Piedmont Electric (Sept. 7), Union Power Cooperative (Sept. 18) and Pee Dee Electric (Sept. 18).

Each electric cooperative is an independent, member-owned organization that supports its local community.The maximum amount awarded per grant is determined by the electric cooperative. Please contact your school’s sponsoring electric cooperative for more information.

Grant winners will be notified during the months of November and December.
