Grants to New York nonprofit organizations in eligible counties to develop organizational capacity. Applicants must submit a letter of intent prior to submitting a full grant application. Funding is intended to assist organizations that are located in one of the following Western New York counties: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, and Wyoming.

The Capacity Building Program supports the exploration of strategic partnerships and capacity-building requests that lead to greater capacity and improved productivity. Funding is for specific activities or projects designed to strengthen an organization’s governance, leadership, technology, programmatic and administrative capacity. Requests should actualize one or more of the following:

  1. Assist in making good and positive strides during a critical period of growth.
  2. Strengthen the ability to program and impact more families in the WNY region.
  3. Strengthen the ability to work with a broader range of constituents and allies.
  4. Attract new financial partners, favorably affect earned revenue numbers, or enhance fee-based revenue streams.
  5. Reflect a comprehensive approach or are a key component of your organization’s strategic plan for long-term sustainability
  6. Foster collaboration.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

- Grants are limited to non-profit organizations which have obtained tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Code.
- All applicants must have three years of 990 filings in order to be eligible to apply for a grant. Please note that postcard filings do not meet eligibility criteria.
- The foundation supports small to mid-size organizations. Small to mid-size being defined as organizations with budgets between $250,000 and $6,000,000.
- Grants are limited to agencies that are physically headquartered in one of the seven counties of Western New York: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, and Wyoming.

Organizations that have been granted an award may reapply to the Foundation two (2) years following the final payment of a grant.

Grants for the following types of groups and uses are not made:
a. Religious Organizations for Religious Purposes
b. Political Organizations, Campaigns, and Candidates
c. Medical & Science Sector
d. Higher Education Institutions
e. Private, Charter, Public, and Religious Schools
f. Municipal and Government
g. Grants or Loans to Individuals
h. Fund-Raising Events, i.e. Sponsorships, Tables, Dinners, and Telethons
i. Endowments
j. Scholarships
k. Capital Campaigns
l. Operating Expenses
m. Programming

Pre-Application Information:

LOI Opens: October 17, 2022
LOI Due: November 30, 2022

If LOI is approved, applications will open mid-December, be due by January 16, and decisions will be made in March.

The Western New York Foundation is accepting verbal LOIs that may be completed in-person, over the phone, or via Zoom. The deadline to schedule your verbal LOI is November 16, 2022.

Organizations are encouraged to schedule a call with the Foundation to determine if a request matches the Foundation’s priorities. To schedule, please email Lauren VanOsten (see details below).

The Foundation will allow the submittal of one application per 501(c)(3) organization at a time.
