Grants of up to $65,000 to California nursing assistant and home health aide programs for programs providing training and support services to caregivers. Priority will be given to programs that will increase the number of direct care workers providing aid in a home-based setting.

Dorothy Rupe CNA Program Grants are awarded to nursing assistant programs providing quality entry-level healthcare training for students, thereby creating economic opportunity for low-income, unemployed, and/or re-entry workers, as well as increasing the availability of CNAs and HHAs in the workforce.

Dorothy Rupe CNA Program Grants can be used for the following:

- Student Support and/or Emergency Assistance – To provide low-income students with financial assistance for program related costs or for one-time, unforeseen expenditures for students at risk of withdrawal. Examples of student support include textbooks, uniforms, and course specific fees and/or supplies—in other words, supplemental costs required of the student that may be cost prohibitive to enrollment.

- Exam Fees and/or Testing Coordinator Travel Expenses – To ensure that students successfully completing CNA training are able to participate in the state exam and receive certification. Travel expenses include mileage and/or a hotel stay for testing coordinators traveling to remote campuses that would otherwise be unable to provide testing services to students. Grant funds may not be used to pay for travel to the Foundation’s annual conference.

- Instructional Support – To fund an instructional assistant position for the purpose of minimizing attrition and improving student outcomes (e.g. course completion and exam pass rates). Grants for instructional assistance generally support additional practice in the skills lab and/or mock testing in preparation for the certification exam. Assistance may be provided by adjunct faculty, a skills lab tutor, or student assistants. Funds may not be used for instruction, administrative support, counseling, general academic tutoring, or instructor release time.
