Grants to Illinois nonprofit organizations and local government agencies to purchase land for wildlife habitat and preservation. Applicants for certain requests must contact the program officer before applying. Funding is intended to acquire land that provides important natural habitat, is identified as a priority for preservation, connects to previously protected natural areas, and is open to the public for recreational use.

The Foundation will consider a limited number of Land Acquisition awards at the level of $1 million or greater. To be considered for support at this level, a proposed multiple-parcel land protection project should purchase at least one parcel of 40 acres or greater and directly expand at least one previously protected natural area of 40 acres or greater.

Projects that do not directly expand previously protected natural areas but include at least one individual parcel 150 acres or greater may still be eligible for funding.

If the project includes multiple parcels, the Foundation will give preference to those that include at least one parcel that is 40 acres or greater in size and expands at least one existing protected area that is 40 acres or greater in size.

The Foundation will consider projects that protect valuable natural resources in perpetuity through the purchase of conservation easements on a limited basis, depending on how such projects match up with the Funding Guidelines.

Applicants may apply for up to 80% of the direct cost of the land and up to $10,000 for restoration activities.

Most successful Land Acquisition proposals are awarded 12-month grants, with the final report due to the Foundation two months after the end of the grant period. The Foundation is open to considering requests for projects of longer duration provided that the applicant provides a detailed plan of work that is likely to be accomplished within the proposed time frame.

Eligible applicants are 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and local government agencies serving Illinois residents.

Applicant organizations must have at least a five-year history of purchasing land in Illinois.

The proposal must demonstrate the organization's ability to complete the project and include a plan ensure the land is protected in perpetuity. For not-for-profit organizations, this means that the applicant has adopted and has a history of operating according to the Land Trust Alliance's Standards and Practices.

For governmental agencies this could involve the use of deed restrictions or conservation easements to ensure the permanent use of the land as a natural area.
