Awards to Tennessee individuals and organizations for outstanding contributions to the arts and cultural life through out the State. The awards are Tennessee’s highest honor in the arts and are intended to celebrate the exceptional contributions of artists, arts organizations, volunteers, schools, educators, local governments, legislators, and corporate citizens on the state or national level. Awards are offered in the following categories: folklife heritage, arts leadership, and distinguished artist.

Awards categories:

  • Folklife Heritage: Presented to folk artists or organizations that have made outstanding contributions to Tennessee’s traditional arts. The award honors significant achievements within art forms that are rooted in the traditional or ethnic cultures of Tennessee.
  • Arts Leadership: Presented to individuals or organizations who have demonstrated significant contributions, which have impacted or advanced the value of the arts in Tennessee. Examples of recipients include arts organizations, businesses, educators, patrons, arts administrators, corporations, and volunteers.
  • Distinguished Artist: Presented to Tennessee artists of exceptional talent and creativity in any discipline whose work has a significant and lasting impact on a state or national level.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Nominations may be submitted by organizations or individuals. Organizations or individual(s) may only submit one nomination per award category.

Nominees for a Governor’s Arts Award must be a Tennessee organization or an individual living in or with close ties to Tennessee. No awards will be presented posthumously. Previous recipients are not eligible for the 2021 Governor’s Arts Awards.

Pre-Application Information:

Nominations are accepted through April 30, 2021.

Recipients will be notified by the Tennessee Arts Commission in the summer/fall of 2021. Awards will be presented by Governor and First Lady Lee in the fall of 2021.
