The Shubert Foundation
12/01/17 6:00 PM EST - Deadline for Theater applications.
Grants to USA nonprofit organizations that focus on the areas of the arts, arts education, theater, and/or dance. Funding will be provided for unrestricted general operating support, rather than for specific projects. The majority of funding is directed to nonprofit, professional theaters (approximately 74%) - and 15% of funds are directed to dance companies - with an emphasis on producing, rather than presenting, organizations. A limited number of grants are made in the program areas of arts-related organizations and education.
Nonprofit, professional theaters in the United States are the primary recipients of Shubert Foundation general operating support grants. Theaters are evaluated individually and with appropriate allowance for size and resources. The standard for awarding these grants is based on an assessment of each organization's operation and its contribution to the field. Artistic achievement, administrative strength and fiscal stability are factored into each evaluation, as is the company's development of new work and other significant contributions to the field of professional theatre in the USA.
The Shubert Foundation views dance as a critical art form, one that is closely related to theatre. The criteria used for Theater are also applied to dance companies.
Some organizations that help support the development of theater and dance are eligible for funding. Grants to these organizations are based principally on an assessment of their work, as demonstrated by past and current performance. Impact, administrative strength, and fiscal stability are factored into each evaluation.
A limited number of scholarships are made to graduate drama departments of private universities. These departments are evaluated principally in terms of their ability to train and develop theater artists.
Funding Criteria - Criteria range from the general to those specific to each applicant; they include:
- Record of artistic achievement
- Impact of the organization and its programs
- Record of developing new work
- Other significant contributions to the field
- Administrative strength
- Ability to generate both earned and contributed income
- Fiscal stability

Recent grants range from $10,000 to $325,000; the larger grants are generally awarded to organizations that have been on The Foundation roster for several years.
These grants are awarded exclusively to USA organizations, which must have current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in order to be eligible for funding.
The Foundation provides grants only to organizations that have an established artistic and administrative track record, as well as a history of fiscal responsibility.
The Foundation does not make grants to individuals, nor does it provide funds for project support, audience development, direct subsidy of reduced-price admissions, conduit organizations (agencies that disburse funds to individuals or other organizations), renovation projects, loans, capital or endowment campaigns.
