Grants to New York nonprofit organizations to improve the justice system and the rule of law. Funding is intended to improve professional expertise and ethics, increase the public's understanding of the law, and facilitate the delivery of legal services to people in need. Grant funds support programs that offer legal assistance for civil services that benefit residents throughout the State.

The Foundation’s grantmaking in the coming year prioritizes funding for civil legal services programs assisting with the essentials of life, namely:

  • Child support;
  • Consumer debt;
  • Housing (including evictions, foreclosures, and homelessness);
  • Family matters (including domestic violence, children, and family stability);
  • Access to health care; access to education;
  • Racial justice; and,
  • Subsistence income (including wages, disability and other benefits).

The Foundation is also determined to reach rural areas of the state. It will also fund programs providing legal assistance for non-litigation civil matters related to housing, family law, immigration, and income maintenance.

Foundation funding for meritorious programs could be awarded for as long as three years, with the opportunity to extend funding beyond that point in special circumstances. The three-year limitation will not necessarily apply to New York State Bar Association projects and programs.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Grantee must maintain its qualification as an organization exempt from income taxation as documented in its original application to the Foundation for funding. At its sole discretion, The Foundation may immediately terminate the grant and rescind funds not yet disbursed.

The organization seeking the grant must be in existence for at least two years.

Grants should not be provided for law school instructional or clinical programs.

No part of the grant may be used to:
- Directly or indirectly influence legislation, whether at a local, state, or federal level; or

- Fund a voter registration drive.

Pre-Application Information:

We are currently accepting grant applications for the 2023 grant cycle. The deadline to submit an application is September 15, 2022.

The applicant should have identified other potential sources of funding or have secured such sources to make the project viable in the year of the project under consideration and, if the project is ongoing, in future years.
