Grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 to California nonprofit organizations and individuals to promote arts and culture in Santa Barbara County. First time applicants are required to attend a workshop prior to submitting an application. Funding is intended to support projects of arts and cultural organizations as well as individual artists in order to enrich the lives of residents in communities throughout the County.
Arts Making Impact grants may be used to support new or innovative projects and joint/collaborative efforts that leverage community resources, provide greater and more diverse participation in the arts, and integrate the arts into learning environments for children and young adults.
AMI funding has served as a catalyst for greater community engagement in the arts and culture of the region, particularly in underserved communities, and endeavors to reach and serve small or rural communities and other areas that currently have little or no access to art and cultural activities.
The AMI Grant program goals are as follows:
Leverage Community Resources
AMI projects may support new or innovative projects and joint/collaborative efforts that leverage community resources, additional funding, and community support.
Increase Community Engagement
AMI projects may be used to increase community engagement and provide greater and more diverse participation in the arts, and integrate the arts into learning environments for children and young adults.
Eliminate Barriers to Cultural Activities
Grant proposals that build beneficial partnerships and collaborations to help eliminate current barriers to cultural activities, such as access to transportation, materials, artists, music, and art instruction to rural youth and underserved communities are encouraged.
Consideration will be given to those projects that demonstrate the following:
- Partnerships, collaboration, innovation, and expansion
- Inclusion of diverse communities and artists in all aspects of program planning and implementation
- Use of professional artists in programs
- Commitment to payment for any artistic services

Grant Requests Range: $500 to $5,000.
The grant period is up to ten months. The upcoming Grant Activity Period will be from March 1, 2019, until December 30, 2019.
Artists or arts organizations applying must be based in Santa Barbara County and provide services to Santa Barbara County residents.
The applicant must be a non-profit organization with tax-exempt status [501(c)(3)] ; or an individual artist; or a district.
Partnerships and collaborations are encouraged.
If an applicant does not have 501(c)(3) status, they may apply under the auspices of a registered 501(c)(3) organization. The fiscal sponsor acts as the fiscal agent for the group or individual applying and assumes all responsibilities required by the contract. Any payment for services rendered is issued to the fiscal sponsor.
Funding Requests are ineligible for the following:
- Capital improvements and construction of buildings or facilities or for purchases of equipment over $1500.
- Organizations primarily involved in political action, legislation, lobbying; projects with religious purposes.
- Programs in facilities that are not ADA compliant.
- Trusts, endowment funds, or investments.
- Profit-making organizations, ventures, or replacement of deficit funds.
- Fundraising or arts services for events in which fundraising is the primary purpose.
- Programs or services intended for private use, or for use by restricted membership.
- Hospitality or food costs.
- Prize Money.
- Purchase of tickets and/or scholarships for an event or program produced by the applicant.
- Expenses incurred before the start or after the ending date of the grant.
Grant workshops are free but require advance registration. First time applicants are required to attend a workshop in order to apply. Workshops are highly recommended for returning applicants.

The Guidelines and Application are available from July 6, 2018.
The Application Deadline is October 1, 2018. Applications must be received no later than 4:00 PM PST. Grant applicants will be notified by February 1 of the following year.
Grant funding is provided as a reimbursement for expenses incurred, not a lump sum up front.
Artists or arts organizations may submit one Arts Making Impact Grant application per year.
