Grants of up to $2,500 and in-kind assistance to Iowa nonprofit service organizations, local units of government, and school districts to implement educational projects and events related to planting trees. Grant funds may be used to purchase trees and mulch from local nurseries. DNR staff members provide planting, mulching, and watering demonstrations and offer guidance to students as they plant their trees. Priority counties are Pottawattamie, Cass, Mills, Montgomery, Fremont, and Page but applications are accepted across the state.
The purpose of the Trees for Kids program is to educate children, teenagers, and young adults about the importance of trees and their myriad benefits, as well as to offer hands-on planting and maintenance experience. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, virtual education programs are encouraged and can include such formats as recorded video of planting, virtual presentation to a classroom or youth group, assigned timeslots for students and families to plant on their own, virtual classroom curriculum about trees and the environment.
GrantWatch ID#: 174007
Grant recipients are awarded up to $2,500 per project to purchase trees and mulch from Iowa nurseries.
Planting days are to be scheduled no earlier than October 1 and no later than November 6; requests that fall outside of this timeframe will NOT be approved.
