Grants of up to $1,500 to British Columbia individuals and grants of up to $2,500 to nonprofit organizations and community groups in eligible locations for certification and training programs designed for athletic coaches, officials, and volunteers. Funding is intended to offset costs associated with professional development for coaching and officiating personnel. Applicants must be located in a northern community within BC Games Zones 7 or 8.

Eligible applicants are invited to either host or attend a National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) course, an Officials certification course, or other mentoring or training development opportunities that will increase the knowledge of those who commit many hours to sport development in northern BC communities.

The following types of activities are eligible for funding:

  • Hosting a sport-specific coach or officials training session in BC Games Zones 7 or 8;
  • Hosting a multi-sport coach or officials training session in BC Games Zones 7 or 8;
  • Assisting coaches and officials who currently reside in BC Games Zones 7 or 8 in pursuing enhanced knowledge and training only available outside the Northern BC region; and
  • Assisting coaches and officials who reside in BC Games Zones 7 or 8 in becoming a certified learning facilitator to train, certify and mentor in Northern BC.

Costs that will be considered in the application include:

  • Event registration fees
  • Event training materials (i.e., training manuals)
  • Reasonable travel costs for a trainer traveling to a community
  • Reasonable travel costs for individuals traveling out of the community.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Individual coaches and officials are eligible to apply for support up to $1,500, while organizations are eligible to apply for support up to $2,500.

Term of Contract:

Only courses and events occurring between October 1, 2021, and December 31, 2021, are eligible.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible applicants are individuals who permanently reside in a northern community located within BC Games Zones 7 or 8 and are endorsed by their respective sports organization or association to pursue training, mentoring, or certification opportunities and will use this training to the benefit of their local community. OR

Community/local sports organizations that are not-for-profit organizations that are located in a northern community within BC Games Zones 7 or 8 and are members in good standing of an appropriate provincial sport organization or working in partnership with an appropriate provincial organization. OR

Provincial sports organizations that are hosting a coaching or officiating course in a northern community located within BC Games Zones 7 or 8.

The following costs are not eligible for reimbursement though should be identified in your application:
- Food for those participants in a workshop/training event
- Facility/venue rental
- Equipment rental
- Projects outside the funding window including events that have already occurred

Organizations can apply for more than one training opportunity but must fill out one online form per course or session.
