Grants to Northern Newfoundland and coastal Labrador nonprofits and organizations for programs that benefit residents of local communities. Funding is intended for programs in the areas of healthcare, social welfare, education, recreation, and general lifestyle.

Grants have been in the areas of health promotion and chronic illness prevention, support for seniors, mental illness support and care, educational support (for school-based equipment, literacy support, and innovative projects in schools), community-based initiatives (playgrounds, recreational equipment, and programs), youth initiatives, and a host of other types of grants.

Ideally, the IGA would like to see the following qualities exhibited in applications for projects and initiatives that it supports:

1. Equity – targeting resources to create balance, trying to respond evenly for the same need over time.
2. Relevance – a project that is meaningful, focused, and in line with existing needs.
3. Appropriateness – a timely project, fitting with current circumstances and conditions.
4. Evidence-Based – a project that has been shown to work effectively, and/or has precedence.
5. Innovation – breaking new ground, offering new ways of doing things.
6. Accountability – a project that can be justified, with responsible actions.
7. Cost Benefit – a project that offers a good return for the investment.
8. Time Scale – a project that is achievable within the indicated time period.
9. Annual Review – a project that is open to evaluation by the IGA board.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The IGA does not have a lower or upper limit on the amount of funding it will consider.

Term of Contract:

Projects should not last for more than three years.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Organizations serving the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador are eligible. The traditional IGA service area is the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland (Reef’s Harbour and North) and all of Labrador, except for Labrador City, Wabush, and Churchill Falls.

The IGA will entertain proposals for projects outside this area if there is clear evidence of direct benefit to the residents of this area.

Examples include the major health care centres outside the region where referrals from within may occur, such as Daffodil Place, Ronald McDonald House, Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Center, and the like.
