The Foundation's current focus is in Northern California, the Central Valley, and the Sierra Nevada, including the entire California-Oregon Klamath River watershed and the watersheds that arise in the Sierras and terminate in Nevada's terminal lakes. The Foundation's definition of Northern California extends from the Oregon border south to, and ending at, the San Luis Obispo, Ventura, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino County lines.

The Foundation emphasizes grants for environmental and conservation efforts, eco-spirituality, grassroots action, environmental education, capacity building, citizen participation, collaborative efforts, innovative programs, land acquisition, planning, and training. Climate change programs at the community level are also eligible for grant consideration. Examples would be projects related to a changing climate, preparing for resilience, learning for adaptation, and promoting changes in lifestyle to help avoid or mitigate climate impacts.
