Grants of up to $5,000 to West Virginia nonprofit organizations for activities to expand the skills of developing artists. Funding is intended to support nonprofits that conduct programs, workshops, courses, internships, and trainings to help artists enhance their artistic abilities so they may further their careers or arts-related businesses.

The Organizations Providing Professional Development Opportunities for Artists grant program is designed to help West Virginia artists gain the skills and support they need to develop thriving arts careers or businesses.  It provides funding to support nonprofit organizations that offer professional development and skills-building activities. To be eligible, activities must be open to the public.

Examples of Eligible Expenses: 

  • Fees for visiting instructors, trainers, and artists
  • Travel expenses for visiting instructors, trainers, and artists
  • Overnight accommodations for visiting instructors, trainers, and artists

Examples of eligible activities include teaching or training artists and artisans how to:

  • Improve or expand their skills or take their art in a new direction
  • Run a successful small business 
  • Photograph their work
  • Build and maintain a professional web site
  • Reach global markets

Estimated Size of Grant:

Funding Level: Up to 50 percent of eligible costs, not to exceed $5,000.

Term of Contract:

- Round One: Projects must occur between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022.
- Round Two: Projects must occur between Jan. 1, 2022 and June 30, 2022.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible applicants:
- 501 (c)(3) WV not-for-profit arts organizations (Nonprofit arts organizations must be in good standing with the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.)
- 501 (c)(3) WV community organizations incorporating the arts into their mission

General eligibility requirements:
- Organizations must be chartered in West Virginia as a nonprofit organization for at least one year prior to application.
- Organizations currently in the process of obtaining 501(c)(3) status may use a qualifying nonprofit as a fiscal agent for arts related projects.
- All applicants must include a Federal Employee Identification Number (FEIN) that is issued in the name of the applicant organization.
- All organizational applicants must have a Dun & Bradstreet (DUNS) Number.

Arts Partners are not eligible for this grant opportunity

Ineligible project activities:
- Hospitality
- Projects taking place outside of West Virginia
- Projects that are restricted to private or exclusive participation, which includes restricted access on the basis of sex, race, color, religion, national origin, disability, age, or marital status

Pre-Application Information:

Postmark Deadlines:
- Round One: February 1, 2021 - For projects occurring between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022
- Round Two: October 1, 2021 - For projects occurring between Jan. 1, 2022 and June 30, 2022

If the postmark deadline for a grant program falls on a weekend, the postmark deadline moves to the first following work day. Hand deliveries will be accepted in the Arts office between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on the deadline date.

- 30 Days: Grant recipients must submit a Final Report within 30 days of the project end date

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires cultural organizations to make their programs, services and activities, including employment, accessible to qualified persons with disabilities.

Applicants must provide a 50% cash match of total project cost.

Organizations are eligible for one Professional Development grant award per year.
