Grants of up to $1,000 to Maine nonprofit organizations for a broad range of humanities projects that will be open to the public. Applicants are encouraged to discuss their projects with program staff prior to applying. Examples of eligible projects include lectures, reading and discussion events, exhibits, film series, cultural celebrations, and symposia.

Up to $1,000

Projects must begin no sooner than eight weeks after the deadline.

While Maine Humanities Council does on occasion make awards to the same organization in consecutive years for exceptional projects, it is not a regular practice.

All applicants must:
- Have an office or address in Maine, or have at least one member of the project who possesses a Maine address;
- Be a 501(c)(3) organization; and
- Learn more about 501(c)(3) organizations at Maine Association of Nonprofits.

- Individuals are not eligible.
- If your organization is not a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, you will need a fiscal sponsor.

- October 17, 2016
- January 13, 2017
- April 14, 2017

Grant application deadlines are firm; online applications will not be accepted after midnight on the deadline date. Late applications will not be reviewed.

Notification will be issued within six weeks of submission.

Applicants are encouraged (though not required) to talk with program staff prior to submitting an application. Past applicants have found it helpful to discuss their ideas with program staff and get advice. Maine Humanities Council staff can recommend humanities scholars, for example, or help you to fine-tune your project to better fit the guidelines.
