Award to a Nevada PreK-12 teacher to recognize skill and dedication in the field of education. In addition to teaching, strong candidates take an active role in their school and community, speak articulately, and demonstrate professional poise. An important criterion in this award is the teacher’s innovation and ability to inspire a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities.

The National Teacher of the Year Program was initiated in 1952 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in order to bring recognition to the importance of teachers as nurturer's of the "American Dream." His intention was to honor all teachers by the selection of a representative teacher from each state who would compete in the yearly choice of the National Teacher of the Year. Nevada has participated since 1956.

The Nevada Teacher of the Year Award is affiliated with the National Teacher of the Year program, the oldest and most prestigious awards program designed to focus public attention on excellence in teaching. The program mission is to select outstanding classroom teachers who are also able to speak for, motivate, and exemplify the contributions of all teachers.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Being named Nevada Teacher of the Year is not only an award, but an honor – one that comes with an enormous responsibility: that of representing the entire profession in Nevada. The Nevada Teacher of the Year acts as:

-A liaison between the teaching community and the legislature, the Department of Education, districts, and communities;

-An education ambassador to businesses, parents, service organizations, and media;

-A resource on the state of the profession to be available for workshops and conferences around the state; and

-An education leader involved in teacher forums and education reform.

The Nevada Teacher of the Year is also expected to attend national events such as the National Teachers' Forum and the National Teacher of the Year Ceremony. In addition, he or she attends education meetings, conferences, and workshops around the state. Since the Teacher of the Year will be requested to attend events and make speeches during the year, he or she must be poised, articulate and have the energy to make and withstand a busy schedule.

In addition to being entered in The National Teacher of the Year Program, the 2018 Nevada Teacher of the Year will have the opportunity to attend the following events:

-Teaching and Learning Convening
-Washington Recognition Week
-ECS Policy Forum on Education
-International Space Camp
-Next Steps Conference
