Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $1,500 to New Mexico nonprofits, organizations, individuals and teachers for projects that promote the knowledge and understanding of native plant species. Previously funded projects have involved education, conservation, and resource. The Foundation currency places a special emphasis on conservation projects.

Projects must meet the goals of the NPSNM Mission Statement:

“The Native Plant Society of New Mexico is a nonprofit organization that strives to educate the public about native plants by promoting knowledge of plant identification, ecology, and uses; fostering plant conservation and the preservation of natural habitats; supporting botanical research; and encouraging the appropriate use of native plants to conserve water, land, and wildlife.”

Types of Requests:

1) Grants are awarded to individual projects with a goal that can be completed within a stated time period and within a specified budget. For example, you can request for a grant to pay for the cost of a specific workshop, or to buy the materials needed for a specific restoration project.

2) Donations are given to nonprofit organizations to support on-going work that meets the objectives and goals of the Native Plant Society. For example, the NPSNM gives annual donations to the four main herbaria in the region: the University of Texas at El Paso; University of New Mexico; Western New Mexico University; and New Mexico State University. The University of New Mexico (UNM) Herbarium applies that money towards its goals of georeferencing (mapping) the specimen label information, with the expertise of New Mexico Natural Heritage (NMNH) to make the information available to the scientific community and the general public.

3) Teacher awards are available to grade 6-12 science teachers who incorporate teaching about plants/plant science/native plants in effective and inspiring ways. A one-time award of $500 will be granted to the teacher, along with one free teacher copy and one free classroom copy of Jack Carter’s book, Trees, and Shrubs of New Mexico.

-Grants: Up to $1,500
-Teacher Awards: $500

Both one-year and multi-year grants are available.

Teacher Awards are one-time only.

Grants will be made to both individuals and organizations.

Nonprofit organizations (including higher education institutions) may apply for a Donation.

Individual teachers of grades 6-12 may apply for a Teacher Award.

Requests for grants or donations will only be accepted electronically. Proposals received after the deadline will not be considered.
