Grants ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 to Greater Boston, Massachusetts nonprofit organizations for programs that address gender, ethnic, and racial disparities, as well as other social inequalities. Preference will be given to innovative activities where a smaller award amount is likely to have a meaningful impact.

Through its grantmaking activities, the Foundation is committed to fostering a spirit of mutual respect, understanding and cooperation among people of diverse backgrounds, for the long-term benefit of all residents of the city.

Types of Support:

The Foundation allocates its grant resources across multiple fields including arts, education, training and research, cultural activities, and social services. It places an emphasis on collaborative programs and projects which engage people of different backgrounds in a common effort to create equal opportunity.

Types of programs include:

-Innovative approaches to problems of inequality in any discipline, including community organizing and advocacy, health, education, employment, recreation and the arts.

-Civic engagement and/or community empowerment.

-Programs combining a focus on community engagement, civil rights and the law.

-Collaborations between organizations with different constituencies.

-Research and advocacy on issues related to equity.

Special Emphases:

-The Trustees have added several refinements to the Foundation’s grantmaking strategy in an attempt to deepen and improve the impact of its funding on the complex and multi-faceted problem of inequality.

-A preference for requests from smaller organizations with annual operating budgets of less than $500,000, where a small grant is likely to have a high impact.

-A preference for funding organizations with diverse boards and staff - or with active plans to diversify organizational leadership - that reflect the constituency of communities served.

-Interest in leveraging support either by making conditional or challenge grants.

-A focus on Greater Boston and the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area. Proposals for Washington will be accepted by invitation-only.

Grant awards range from $5,000 to $10,000.

Because of limited grant resources, and in fairness to all applicants, grants are generally awarded for one year only.

Applications are invited from organizations serving the Greater Boston area.

The Foundation prefers to fund project-related requests and is reluctant to support general operations.

The Foundation meets in December and June of each year. The application deadline is April 1, followed by a fall application deadline of October 1.

The Boston program employs an open application process. Proposals from Washington-based organizations will be considered by invitation-only.

Organizations interested in applying to the foundation are welcome to contact staff prior to applying.
