Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $50,000 to Texas nonprofit organizations for health programs in the Lower Rio Grande area, including the counties of Cameron, Starr, Hidalgo, and Willacy. Funding is intended for programs and projects with specific goals and timescales. Priority will be given to proposals that impact many, are collaborative in nature, reflect effective stewardship of organizational resources, demonstrate replicable programs, and are supported by many volunteers and donors in the community.

The Legacy Foundation will consider funding for:
- New projects or programs
- Operating expenses
- Capital purchases and projects
- Indirect costs up to 10%
- Staff positions (If an adequate sustainability plan is in place for the position if it is permanent).

The Legacy Foundation funds programs that measurably improve the health of those living in the lower Rio Grande Valley by promoting healthy lifestyles and providing increased access to healthcare for all. Its number one strategic priority is Obesity and Diabetes Prevention. However, it will consider funding for all types of health-related initiatives that fall under the following program areas:
- Obesity and diabetes
- Healthy lifestyles
- Access to care
- Mental health
- Aging in place
- Dental health
- Medical education

Estimated Size of Grant:

The Legacy Foundation will accept requests of up to $50,000.

Term of Contract:

The Legacy Foundation will accept single year requests for Collaborative Grants.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

In order to be eligible to receive funding from the Legacy Foundation, an organization must:
- Be a nonprofit organization described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and exempt from taxation under section 501(a) or 170(c); or an organization described in sections 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code
- Serve residents of Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr or Willacy Counties
- Request funding for projects or programs that demonstrate a positive effect on the health of residents within the funding area
- Have no funded requests on file within the previous 12 month period within the responsive, operational or collaborative categories.

The Legacy Foundation will not consider funding for:
- Insurance premiums
- Endowments
- Individuals
- Fundraising event sponsorships
- Debt retirement
- Operational deficits

Evaluation of the projects/programs is based in part on a Logic Model. The Logic Model tool can be used to help plan, implement, and evaluate the project and its impact. Reviewing or filling out a Logic Model with key staff before the application process can be beneficial. A downloadable Logic Model can be found below.

Pre-proposal Conference:

The Annual Funding Forum is held every August, at the start of the year’s second grant application cycle. The next Funding Forum is scheduled for Aug 15th, 2019. More information can be seen at: https://www.vblf.org/grantmaking/funding-forum

Pre-Application Information:

The Legacy Foundation accepts responsive grant applications twice a year, with deadlines of May 1 and November 1.

Organizations may submit one proposal per cycle, if not currently funded.

All applications must be completed online, including the submission of all required attachments, in order to be processed. Please note that deadlines will be strictly enforced, so please start early and call staff if you have any questions or need assistance in any way
