Grants of up to $30,000 to Alaska IHE faculty members for science and engineering research. The purpose of this grant is to provide early-or-mid-career faculty seeking to change their research focus to one of the following topics: Earth system science, aeronautics, and technologies for space and extreme environments.

A research initiation grant is designed to give a PI initial funding for a research topic that is relevant to NASA and its strategic objectives. The goal is for the research to mature so the PI can submit a competitive proposal to one of the NASA's regular grant programs:

Proposed academic research projects must be aligned with new or continuing NASA research priorities and should have the potential to link Alaska faculty to NASA colleagues at Field Centers and/or Mission Directorates.

Research Priority Areas:

1) Earth System Science:
-Advance Earth system science to meet the challenges of climate and environmental change.
-Monitoring of environmental change, mapping and remote sensing, and hazard prediction and mitigation.

2) Technologies for Space and Extreme Environments:
-Create the innovative new space technologies for exploration, science, and economic future.
-Monitoring of environmental change, mapping and remote sensing, and hazard prediction and mitigation.
-Land transport, shipping, aviation, aerospace, and telecommunications technology.

3) Aeronautics Research:
-Advance aeronautics research for societal benefit.
-Land transport, shipping, aviation, aerospace, and telecommunications technology.

The Research Initiation program will provide up to $20,000; or if a collaborative proposal between MAU’s, up to $30,000.

The period of performance of this award may not exceed 14 months. Projects are eligible for one-time funding only.

The expected start date is January 1, 2017. The expected end date is May 15, 2018.

The competition is open to full-time faculty at affiliated higher education institutions in good standing.

Adjuncts and post-docs are not eligible to apply.

Alaska NASA EPSCoR Program encourages the participation of PI’s who are women, under-represented minorities, or persons with disabilities.

Applications must be submitted by email to Rebecca Lees by November 1, 2016. The subject line of the email should say: Alaska NASA EPSCoR RID Application.
