Fellowships to Virginia artists and students who demonstrate excellence and creative ability within the visual art disciplines. This program provides qualifying individuals with funding to support their career or education in the arts. Applications are invited from professional artists, graduate and undergraduate students studying visual arts, and graduate students studying art history.

Fellowships will be awarded under the following categories:

-Professional Individual

-Professional Collaborative: Professional artists who can clearly demonstrate a history of ongoing collaboration may apply together for one fellowship. Collaborating winners will receive one fellowship award to divide among themselves.

-Graduate (Individual only): Includes Art History

-Undergraduate (Individual only): Includes College bound high school seniors.

-Graduate and Undergraduate Half-year (Individual only): Half-year fall semester Fellowship awards may be considered on a case-by-case basis for full-time students in the final year of a degree program who plan to graduate in December 2018.

Recipients are selected based on merit, not by artistic medium. However, applicants must select one of the following disciplines for their applications that best represent the applicant’s work sample:

-Crafts
-Drawing
-Film/Video
-Mixed Media
-New/Emerging Media
-Painting
-Photography
-Printmaking
-Sculpture
-Art History (Grad Only)

Term of Contract:

The fellowship period is August 2018 - May 2019.

Half-year fall semester Fellowship awards may be considered on a case-by-case basis for students who plan to graduate in December 2018.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Professional Artists:

You must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, as well as a current legal resident of Virginia, and have been so for at least 24 consecutive months prior to the application deadline.

You must continue to be a legal resident of Virginia for the Fellowship period of Aug 2018 - May 2019. A legal resident has a valid Virginia driver’s license, and/or pays income taxes in Virginia, and/or is a registered Virginia voter. Applicants must be able to provide verification of residency upon request.

You cannot be a degree-seeking student at the time of the application deadline nor plan to be a degree-seeking student during the Fellowship period of Aug 2018 - May 2019.

Not eligible:
-Recipients of a VMFA Professional Fellowship after July 2013
-Recipients of three or more Fellowships in any category
-Full-time VMFA employees
-Students currently enrolled full time in a degree seeking program at the time of the application deadline (Nov. 2017)

Students (Graduate and Undergraduate):

You must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, as well as a current legal resident of Virginia, and have been so for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the application deadline.

You must continue to be a legal resident of Virginia for the Fellowship period of Aug 2018 - May 2019. A legal resident has a valid Virginia driver’s license, and/or pays income taxes in Virginia, and/or is a registered Virginia voter.

Students paying in-state tuition to an accredited Virginia college, university, or school of the arts qualify as legal residents of Virginia. If you attend an accredited college, university, or school of the arts in Virginia but do not qualify for in-state tuition, you may not apply for a VMFA Fellowship until you establish Virginia residency.

If you are a legal Virginia resident but attend an accredited college, university, or school of the arts outside of the state full-time, you may still apply. Applicants must be able to provide verification of residency upon request.

You must be planning to be enrolled full-time and qualify as a Virginia resident as outlined above for the entire academic year Aug 2018 - May 2019 at an accredited college, university, or school of the arts.

Half-year fall semester Fellowship awards (worth $3,000 for graduate students and $2,000 for undergraduate students) may be considered on a case-by-case basis for full-time students in the final year of a degree program who plan to graduate in December 2018.

Not eligible:
-Recipients of three or more Fellowships in any category
-Full-time VMFA employees
-Students that will NOT be enrolled full time in a degree seeking program during the fellowship period August 2018 - May 2019.

Learn more about the VMFA Fellowship Program with this free discussion open to practicing and aspiring artists and art historians. Statewide Manager, Jeffrey Allison will provide a history of the program and review the eligibility requirements as well as helpful hints for navigating the application process.

The session will be held Wednesday, September 27, 5:00 - 6:00 PM at the Academy Center of the Arts, Lynchburg, VA.

Pre-Application Information:

The application deadline is 5:00 PM on November 3, 2017. Applications not received by the deadline will not be considered.

For undergraduate and graduate students only, a most recent transcript officially stamped and sealed by your school’s registrar must be postmarked by Monday, November 20, 2017.

All applicants will be notified by letter the first week of February 2018.
