Grants to Middle Tennessee nonprofit organizations in eligible counties for projects and programs with a focus on the areas of education, low-income youth, and conservation. Funding is intended for programs that promote academic advancement and social-emotional learning for kindergarten through traditional college age.

Programs must operate in the following counties: Bedford, Cannon, Cheatham, Clay, Coffee, Davidson, Dekalb, Dickson, Fentress, Franklin, Giles, Grundy, Hickman, Houston, Humphreys, Lawrence, Lincoln, Macon, Marion, Marshall, Maury, Montgomery, Moore, Overton, Perry, Pickett, Putnam, Robertson, Rutherford, Sequatche, Smith, Jackson, Stewart, Sumner, Trousdale, Van Buren, Warren, Wayne, White, and Williamson.

Education - Maddox is interested in the following types of education programs:

  • Academic support and preparation programs, including tutoring services
  • Programs that can demonstrate direct impact on academic success
  • Summer or after-school academic enrichment
  • Math and reading programs
  • Literacy programs
  • Positive decision-making programs
  • Social-emotional learning that is not clinical counseling
  • Programs may be provided in a formal school setting or in a setting external to school.

Marginalized Youth - Maddox is interested in the following types of programs for marginalized youth:

  • After-school programs
  • Positive decision-making programs
  • Youth development programs
  • Mentoring programs
  • Youth fellowship and internship programs
  • Leadership and civic engagement programs

Wildlife Conservation - Maddox is interested in the following types of wildlife conservation programs:

  • Activities that get marginalized youth into the outdoors with wildlife
  • Hunting and fishing programs
  • Game and fish habitat conservation efforts
  • Conservation and wildlife habitat public policy advocacy

Term of Contract:

The Maddox Fund will primarily fund one-year grants, but it will consider multi-year awards on a case-by-case basis.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Middle Tennessee nonprofit organizations can apply.

Within their three areas of interest, the Maddox Fund will not consider:
- Organizations incorporated for less than 1 year
- 501(c)(3) organizations that are government or government affiliates, supporting organizations or private foundations
- Endowments
- Debt reduction
- Depreciation
- Capital campaigns
- Organizations not operating programs within the 41 counties of Middle Tennessee
- Direct to scholarships to individuals
- Organizations primarily engaged in lobbying or electoral politics
- Congregations or religious organizations for projects that primarily benefit their own members or for evangelical purposes. Exceptions are made for programs that: 1) receive broad community support; 2) keep separate financial statements; 3) primarily benefit persons outside their congregational members; and 4) do not proselytize.

Pre-proposal Conference:

The Maddox Fund will offer budget workshops for nonprofits wanting clarification on budget issues. New applicants are encouraged to attend a workshop, but it is not required. Budget workshops will be offered on:

November 18th, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
December 15th, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
January 6th, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Timeline:
- August/September: Application available online
- September through January: Meetings with nonprofits about proposals
- December/January: Budget workshops
- January 15, 4:30 PM CST: Grant deadline (adjusted for holidays)
- May: Grants announced
- May/June: Budget and outcome revision; contracting
- July 1: Grant checks available
