Grants to Middle Tennessee nonprofit organizations in eligible counties for projects and programs with a focus on the areas of education, low-income youth, and conservation. Funding is intended for programs that promote academic advancement and social emotional learning for Pre-K (4-5 year olds) through traditional college age.

Programs must operate in the following counties: Bedford, Cannon, Cheatham, Clay, Coffee, Davidson, Dekalb, Dickson, Fentress, Franklin, Giles, Grundy, Hickman, Houston, Humphreys, Lawrence, Lincoln, Macon, Marion, Marshall, Maury, Montgomery, Moore, Overton, Perry, Pickett, Putnam, Robertson, Rutherford, Sequatche, Smith, Jackson, Stewart, Sumner, Trousdale, Van Buren, Warren, Wayne, White, and Williamson.

Maddox is interested in the following types of education programs:

  • Pre-K programs
  • Academic support and preparation programs, including tutoring services
  • Programs that can demonstrate direct impact on academic success
  • Summer or after-school academic enrichment
  • Math and reading programs
  • Positive decision-making programs
  • Social-emotional learning that is not clinical counseling
  • Programs may be provided in a formal school setting or in a setting external to school.

Maddox is interested in the following types of low-income programs:

  • After-school programs
  • Positive decision-making programs
  • Youth development programs
  • Mentoring programs
  • Youth fellowship and internship programs
  • Pre-K programs

The Fund supports conservation programs that protect wildlife habitat, as well as youth hunting and fishing programs. Programs include:

  • Activities that get low-income youth into the outdoors with wildlife
  • Hunting and fishing programs
  • Game and fish habitat conservation efforts
  • Conservation and wildlife habitat public policy advocacy

Term of Contract:

The Charitable Fund will primarily fund one-year grants, but it will consider multi-year awards on a case-by-case basis.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Middle Tennessee nonprofit organizations can apply.

Within their three areas of interest, the Charitable Fund will not consider:
- Organizations incorporated for less than 3 years
- 501(c)(3) organizations that are government or government affiliates, supporting organizations or private foundations
- Endowments
- Debt reduction
- Depreciation
- Capital gifts
- Organizations not operating programs within the 41 Counties of Middle Tennessee
- Scholarships to specific institutions not previously supported by Dan and Margaret Maddox
- Organizations primarily engaged in lobbying or electoral politics
- Congregations or religious organizations for projects that primarily benefit their own members or for evangelical purposes. Exceptions are made for programs that: receive broad community support, keep separate financial statements, and primarily benefit persons outside their congregational members.

The Charitable Fund will not support family emergency assistance, including programs which provide rent and utility assistance, food and clothing.

Pre-proposal Conference:

The Maddox Charitable Fund will offer budget workshops at the Fund's office for nonprofits wanting clarification on budget issues. New applicants are encouraged to attend a workshop, but it is not required.

If you would like to attend a workshop, email Joseph Gutierrez with the date you would like to attend. Please limit attendance to 2 people from each nonprofit as space is limited.

If you are unable to make it to the office for a workshop, we will have an online workshop on December 4th at 2:00 PM. Please e-mail the Fund if you would like to attend that. There is also a budget tutorial video if you are unable to make any of these dates.

Pre-Application Information:

The next grant application deadline is January 15, 2020.

- August/September: Application available online
- September through January: Meetings with nonprofits about proposals
- December/January: Budget workshops
- January 15, 4:30 PM CST: Grant deadline (adjusted for holidays)
- May: Grants announced
- May/June: Budget and outcome revision;contracting
- July 1: Grant checks available
